I seem to get a lot of that condition with the hosta I overwinter in pots. I just assume it has something to do with non-ideal conditions in a pot.

Those close-ups seal it, it's infected and I suggest you take it back to where you bought it and see if they'll give you a refund.

They've said they'll take the plant back from me and send it off for testing. I'm not going after them for a refund as it's a home nursery and the only local importer of newer hosta varieties that I know, plus they seem to be taking it seriously unlike the bigger, more expensive businesses.

@miketropic, I'm ashamed to say I moved and left it behind and I don't know!

I have my reasons though: it became hideous in the same season that I bought it, with the pale yellow parts turning to white and then melting despite getting no direct sunlight at all. After that happened, I thought maybe it wanted a bit more light so I moved it so that the newer, non-melted leaves could get at least a couple hours of sun - no joy. Other hostas in both spots were both completely fine so I don't know what the problem was.

Eventually I moved it from my patch of yard into one of the building's common landscaping beds, along with three other hostas I donated. Since moving away one month ago, I visited the old place to have a look and one of the other gardener residents seems to have moved all the hostas I planted in that spot. I found the other three not far away, looking quite happy, except for my mystery hosta. So either it melted completely and died (the spot was pretty sunny which is probably why the hostas were moved), it's so small that it's hiding under the groundcover, it's been moved away from the street sides of the building...or it got shovel-pruned.

If I run into one of my old neighbours again I will ask about its fate. As for its type I suspect that it was an Earth Angel sport, because the colour progression matches EA and EA is popular enough that it would have been carried by that particular small nursery.
