Painting house plus adding deck

last modified: 8 years ago

Hello, we are in the process of selecting a painter for our exterior. I’d like to start thinking about color now. We don’t like grey or tan but are open to other colors. The door will also be painted. I know the door is not the correct style for the house but it’s not going to be replaced at this time as much as I would like to Though the storm door will be.

Additionally we will be adding a deck on the front. The plan is to take the cement stair out and have a deck starting from just to the left of the mailbox over to the window on the right. There would be no railing but a small deck cleat all around the edge. The deck would come out as deep as the bottom stair with the steps inset.

Just found out out we are being scheduled for mid June. Will only have a few weeks to pick colors. Any suggestions?

This darker green is a siding color; not sure what paint color it would be but it would suit your home.

Just an FYI: For your deck, consider choosing CWF or a natural wood stain that absorbs rather than one that coats/covers and can peel like paint.

Also consider building the deck (specifically support posts) as an arbor -- giving you the option to add greenhouse material to create a flat porch later.

These precast concrete bases for posts that have a channel on each side work well to drain water away from the posts (making them less likely to rot) and, if your posts are to extend above the deck level, you can attach the boards that support your deck to the sides of the posts.

I would consider a medium blue exterior with a muted orange front door.

Thanks everyone. I Like the navy blue and it was a color my DH was drawn to. I also like the color reddish orange door idea. With navy would a deeper coral color door work? Our current door is orange and I think I’d like something different this time.

it was asked above about putting the porch all the way across. The yard narrows on the left. The intent was to have the landing for door wider as the way it is now you can’t open the screen without stepping off the landing and to also provide a space for a small table and chair set as we often sit on the stoop in the spring and fall as the south facing sun makes it quite pleasant during that time of year. Plus we live in a very social neighborhood so we often chat and drink wine with neighbors in the front. :)

Wanted to thank everyone again. House is almost complete, just a few areas of touch up to be finalized. Here is a shot of it today. The door color is lighter than I wanted but DH really liked it and it’s something we can paint ourselves later on easily.

Thanks! I’m jumping the gun a bit but if we keep the door it’s current color would it be too much to add these chairs to the deck we are adding? Maybe pair it with a white bistro table
