It's dinnerware. How can it not be durable? China doesn't wear out. If you drop it, it'll break, just like all other china. Buy spares.

Don't know about West Elm but I purchased a set of Apilco from Williams and Sonoma a year ago and it still looks great. I got rid of my IKEA white plates that had gray cutlery marks all over. No marks in the Apilco, but it is a little pricey.

My Apilco is still going strong after nearly 20 years. No marks, no chips. Pillivuyt is also great- I have a lot of their pieces too.

Hi, we bought a set from Pottery Barn a few years ago which I really liked. But when we got it home, the dinner plates were too big for our cupboard doors to close (it was an older house but they seemed like a standard sized cupboard to me). Anyway we had to return them for that reason. Just to be on the safe side, check the diameter of the dinner plates and the depth of your cupboards to be sure they'll fit. Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma and West Elm all owned by same parent company so I expect similar specs on many of their items.

We have Maxwell and Williams dinnerware which I am very happy with. I also love Sophie Conran for Portmeirion and have almost purchased it several times. Denby is also really good quality a little on the expensive side but gorgeous colours and patterns and very hearty stuff.

You didn't ask, but I'll throw out my preference - Dansk. Been using my set for 15 years and they still look great.

Looks like West Elm has a range of dinnerware. Some may be better than others as far as fragility and utensil marks are concerned. Oh,and put me down as another Sophie Conran for Portmeirion lover. Great stuff for the price point.

I just purchased the coupe stoneware from west elm. The dinner plates have a lip and they don’t rest easily in the dishwasher. I think I need to return them

I bought the Kanto collection at West Elm and right away the large dishes started chipping. Within 6 months 5 or the 8 large dishes had chipped. They replaced them (took 6 months to replace them), but then those started chipping, and now 3 years later I have 7 chipped dishes of the 8. The other items in the collection have held up well on the chipping front, but I bought them in white and because of the matt finish, they look old and worn after 3 years. They stain easily, so don't eat curry in them, and you'll see lots of grey scratch marks from your cutlery. Some might find this aged look charming, but it's not what I paid for. I definately would not describe the Kanto set as 'durable' albeit it is pretty when you first buy it.

Agree about these dishes chipping. I got a full set two months ago and want to replace them already. You barely bump them and they chip. Also, they stain VERY easily and food gets stuck on them, making them hard to keep clean. I love the shape and look but they're not practical. And honestly, the chipping is bad but they come out of the dishwasher looking gross and that might be worse!

West Elm Kanto collection is absolute trash. I don’t understand how it keeps getting great magazine reviews - and it’s very telling that it seems pretty impossible to find consumer reviews of it. We spent a fortune on multiple place settings a few years ago and literally as we started to use them they immediately began to chip badly. I don’t think we have a single dinner or side plate that isn’t heavily chipped around the sides. It has also cost us in dishwasher repairs when chips have broken off in our dishwasher and gone on to block it. I deeply regret purchasing them and would never recommend them to anyone. I’ve been searching for a durable replacement but am wary of trying other brands after this terrible experience. It’s a far cry from our early 2000’s Hoganas Keramik plateware which was durable and gorgeous, but sadly broke over the years.
