Root Training Advice

I have quite a few seedling that I've started this past winter. It's just now starting to warm up enough that I'm comfortable repotting. They've been in 3oz solo cups and are outgrowing them. I potted about 8 in Al's gritty mix in small clay pots. The others I want to try root training and wasn't to make sure I have the process down right. I've read some old posts on here and watched some videos on YouTube.

-Wash the soil off the roots.

-Cut the caudex with a clean blade wiped with alcohol

-Seal with waterproof woodglue and hang to dry for at least a day

-Nick around the edge of the new cut and apply rooting gel

-Pot with a piece of plastic or Styrofoam under the cut to cause the roots to flare

Am I on the right track? Any other advice before I try this for the first time? Can I use gritty mix for this too? Some comments on old posts say you can.

Thanks!!

Travis
