Mantle needs decorating

Love my mirror and openness of this area of my house, but I need something on the mantle.

I think in this case, less is more. Anything you add will only compete with the mirror which is the hero of the space. Remove both elements you have there, and add a simple (not ornate) birdcage or lantern with some succulents inside, off to one side. Or, a clear jug vase with a tall branch in it. That's all I'd do.

I agree the mirror on its own is enough.

I'm just asking this to the pros out of curiosity. Should the mirror color match the wall or trim?

    So pretty.

I'd do two or three tall, chunky pillar candleholders (with candles!) of varying height on one end of the mantle only. I wouldn't try to "balance out" the mantle by putting anything on the other end, as I think it looks less contrived with something simple (and functional -- light those candles and enjoy the reflection!) on one end only.

I'll be honest, it's not my thing. Does the mirror look okay? Sure, it looks okay. But is it the best that space could be? No, it's not. Mirrors over fireplaces are usually not the best look. A round mirror in all of that rectangular-ness going on is also not working for me. To me it's just stopping my eye on the mirror instead of letting me take in the beauty of that whole wall. It's also just another "hard" piece against all of the other hard-ness. I think you could get a bigger impact by hanging art there or by hanging a textured decorative piece. If you're dead set on keeping the mirror, then I would add a "soft" and a "living" element by putting some type of faux decorative branch in a skinny vase(s) on one side and leave it at that. Nothing more on the mantel.

Hi, love your mirror and your chimney!

I was wondering if changing the colour of the wall behind it wouldn't make your decor pop a bit more? Something like a sage green, so you don't go too far from your neutrals but still give it a bit of depth...

I would add colourful candles in your 2 candleholders on the right side. I agree with @IdaClaire that I wouldn't put anything on the other end of the mantle. Still, if you think that something is missing, get an accessory that is low and put it between the middle and the right end. If it was me I'd use a plant or 3 small old books stacked up.

    Hope it helps

Mehdia, that's kind of my question in reverse. I asked about painting the mirror in my first post.

Ah Chloe sorry it must have slipped my attention when I was reading the thread... I guess great minds think (almost) alike ;-)

It looks like your fireplace needs a little bit more. If the mirror was longer it might work better. You have a lot of space on that wall, so if you got a mirror that was twice the size you might find you don't need anything else on the mantle. You could also try finding a piece of large artwork that is twice the size. You have a lot of space to work with, so don't be afraid of it.

Personally I like to change out my mantle setting throughout the year. I keep boxes of the collections I have accumulated and put together based on season and holidays and I coordinate that to my table centerpieces and front door displays such as seasonal wreaths etc. To match the mirror setup I like the suggestions of a birdcage and potted evergreens, also a wide white candle in a glass casing and small clear round vase to hold fresh white rose stems this summer would be nice the glass would coordinate with the shine of the mirror.
