Mass weed prevention

We purchased a house a couple of months ago and have been busy remodeling the inside but the outside has some major weed issues. I've been working on hand pulling weeds in the Southern area of the yard but the north section is all weeds. A mix of stinky bob, Ivy, creeping buttercups, dandelions, Spanish bluebells (I hate removing ) and probably some other various weeds thrown in.

This area was previously were the past owners kept a pig and all their compost so it's very rich soil. Any tips on managing this?

What do you want to do with the area? Leave it in weeds or change it into a lawn or flower beds?

Where do you live? If you live in the south, you can still put in a lawn there (go to the Lawns forum). If you live in the north and want a lawn, I suggest simply mowing it until August and then begin the RoundUp killing process to prepare for a lawn (to to the Lawn forum). Unless you live in the PNW, trying to plant a cool season grass in May is a waste of time and money.

Regardless, start mowing. Right now things are blooming and going to seed which means there will be more seeds next year. Mowing will help reduce seeding.

For this part of the yard our plan is for this to be the grass/lawn area. I will have planting beds around the base of the fence and there are a few friends trees scattered in there too. My husband has been mowing occasionally to help ( we don't live there yet). I do live in the PNW, I thought I could plant grass in May or September here? I thinking it might be best to wait till next May to plant grass though just to make sure the weeds are under control first?

I also wanted to add there are some 30 year old grape Vines back there to that aren't pictured.

I had a similar problem 2 months ago in a new house we bought. i felt really bad that i wasnt able to control the weeds and unpack and manage a toddler ..so then I got some terrific advice here. i started using a weed and feed and and nothing happened. then finally i got some advice and this was it - weed and feed first ..then mow it (will feel like you are winning and will feel better about your yard) then spot spray it once some of them come back. . weed and feed again ( I used IFAs step 2 program ). don't cut your grass too short. mow often . I have a large deep green weed free front yard that I can roll in . here is a link .. there is some great advice on the type of fertiliser and weed control to use.
