Pool Handrails

Newly purchased house, inground pool. Pool ladder at deep end. Walk in steps and seating ledge at shallow end. However, no handrail by steps. Is this common?

Should I consider adding handrail?

My pool has no ladders or rails. There is a swim out in the deep end and corner steps in shallow. My mom wishes there was a hand rail but everyone else finds it easy to get in and out.

When I was having my pool built in 2005, hand rails had just become optional and not mandatory (in my area of south Florida). We didn’t care for the look so we did not put one in. It seems dated now whenever I see it, fwiw.

If you have plans for any elderly people or someone not steady on their feet to use the pool, then it's a good idea.

If you do install, if the handrail is metal, it must be bonded as per NEC (National Electric Code) 680 to rail escutcheons/cups.
