Soak the squares for a bit then wring them or spin on gentle and put them in the dryer. I'd do the yardage separately.

I've soaked them like Donna said, done some squeezing, rolled them in a towel then put them in a bag or closed pillowcase and did the dryer.

Thirty years quilting and I have never had a shrinkage issue with not prewashing. Though many years ago I did use a red that bled, now spot check for color fastness. with dark fabrics. Batting does not make a difference, that I have noticed, relative to the top/back. Great Colors in that Helen.

I use a ton of precuts and never wash them or my yardage. I haven't ever had a problem with shrinkage. I do throw in a Shout Color Catcher when I wash the completed quilt to handle any dye running. The only thing I pre-wash is flannel.

I'm biting the bullet and trying it without prewash. Thanks to all of you for your input.

I didn't want to be the first one to chime in here yesterday but I agree with everyone else's comments. I never prewash and always wash finished quilts. I've never had a problem either. That Fassett quilt is gorgeous Helen. Good luck Rita. This may change your life.

I prewash sometimes - especially batiks in dark colors. I don’t prewash precuts - certainly not 5” or 10” squares or strips. I sometimes prewash fat quarters. I mix them all up in a quilt all the time. I’ve never tried to preshrink the batting. I use warm & natural cotton. After all the quilting and washing, the shrinkage hardly matters. I do wash after quilting and partially dry in a dryer. Sometimes, I lay the partially dry quilt on the floor and try to square up the edges - lots of tugging and ironing and occasionally some trimming - before sewing on the binding.

I always prewash my yardage because the chemicals bother my hands. But I have mixed with non-washed charms before and had no problem. If you want to wash them I would soak in some warm water, roll in a towel, then press with a warm iron till dry.

We had a house fire and the cleaners washed & dried all of my fabric. Some pieces shrink at different rates and some even changed shape when relaxed.

I'm pretty sure that's because I have fabric from all over. Some bought on vacation at marvelous, little shops in the back of beyond with new bolts & old bolts - different manufactures, etc. Some fabric from friends stashes - unknown manufactures. Tightly woven and loosely woven shrink differently.

Chiming in to say I don't pre-wash my pre-cuts, and I've never had a shrinkage issue. Love that quilt, Valarie! I have some Kaffe Fassett 6" squares I purchased a couple of years back, and now I know what to do with them. Be sure to keep us posted on your pre-cut progress, Rita!

Funny Sidenote: In my head, I always read his name & pronounced it "Coffee Faucet." When I heard someone in a video introduce him, I smacked myself. ;)

It still takes me a moment to adjust and pronounce it correctly (first name one syllable with long a; last name rhymes with 'bassett'). Anyone else butcher up his name the first time you read it? :)

Kaffe = One syllable; rhythms with “Safe.”

Fassett = Two syllables; rhymes with “Asset.”

I read this as a way to remember his name. “You have a Safe Asset with Kaffe Fassett!”

I butchered his name every time I opened my mouth to speak it...thank you for the mnemonics, maybe now I'll finally say it correctly !! V.
