Hmmmm. Thought it might be fuchsia, but shouldn't it bloom orangey red?

Note that as indicated above California fuchsia - which does bloom orange - is something other than Fuchsia. And since the plant in question isn't blooming at all yet we don't know if it has the right flowers for California fuchsia or not. However I don't think the foliage is quite the same anyway. But since it is comparatively decorative you might as well keep it, wait for the flowers.

It does look like Epilobium. Mine don't bloom until July.

California fuschia (Epilobium) blooms late in summer and into the fall. Maybe your neighbor has one - they spread.

This looks exactly like my baby California Fuschias. It will grow taller. Mine bloom in August (Westchester).

Agreed. I hacked mine all down to the ground a few weeks ago (probably should have done it earlier this year) after not being aggressive enough last year. They get big fast! I've also got them all over the yard now after being overzealous with dividing them last year.

Ooh, you can divide them? I'd like to encourage mine to spread. When is the best time of year for that, and any technique tips to share with a relative newb?

In my experience they are easy to propagate (and they send out runners so don't overdo it like I did).

First I tried cuttings of the newer growth. Those rooted in water very easily in a week or two. After a couple more weeks I planted directly into the ground and they grew pretty easily in mid-spring.

Next I went up to the bushes and pulled out the side growth. When they came up with roots on them I dug a 6" hole in the ground and stuck them in. Almost all of those died back to the ground and grew back a couple months later in the summer. They are kind of taking over now but I like them.
