Remove the overmantel, for sure. If that's not enough, you could replace the mantel with something more rustic.

Are you switching to beach coastal look? Because nothing in the posted picture says beach or coastal.

This is a house we are buying, and it is decorated with the present owners tastes. My husband loves this house and we've been looking a long time. So hoping to put my tropical beach look on a Tuscan Home. He loves how I decorate, but we don't have the budget. So want to make it more like a Tuscan home on the beach, because that's how I decorate and the theme I've liked for years. Whites, sand colors, blues, starfish, ferns, and tropical plants. The heavy formal ornamental look is just not me. Want to keep the Tuscan feel a little if I can, this neighborhood is all Tuscan homes. Any advice, pictures, how to change the look on a budget, I can send more pics. We don't move in till August.

love rattan, I have a few Ficks Reed pieces I adore, it it that easy to remove the top mantle piece? can't afford to tear up the wall, but I am having some of the rooms painted before moving in....need to brighten it up....for sure...thanks, love any ideas

Beachwalk, that overmantel is probably just some molding applied to the wall. Yes, it will damage the drywall when you rip it off, but it's easy enough to fix with some drywall mud.
