What are you looking for? What does the opposite area look like? It is actually a pretty color just not balanced at this point. You can build the room either way, you just need to start with something you really love, a rug, pillow, artwork...

I think it is far easier to choose a paint color when you have a rug and fabric to point you in the right direction. It isn't easy to find a rug to match paint.....Not that I've, you know, been looking for two years or anything. Lol

Any chance you would turn the sofa to face out to the pool? Seems like a lot of wasted space this way. I don't think you should wait for a rug to pick a color. It is obvious you have to work with the beautiful flooring and the sofa colors. I think any rug should be solid or it will be busy with the floor. Save the print for pillows on the sofa, and possibly a painted coffee table.

handymam, thanks for the suggestion..I have thought about turning the couch but I think it will stick out too far other room..I will give it a shot..at is point I am willing to try anything!

If you want to do it the easy way, and who doesn't, choose your rug first and your wall color Last. Here 's why, rugs are the most limited selection and the paint choice is infinite. I apply the rug first to every room I do whether I am specifying a wall to wall carpet, Tibetan rug or something my client already owns. The rug is the color anchor for the rooms upholstery, curtains and lastly the wall colors.. O

It is very common (and good!) advice to select the rug color first because it's much easier to find paint to match the rug than vice versa. IMO, a modern rug would better match the color of your wall (which I like) and your couch which also has a modern vibe.

First you pick the rug, then you pick your fabric colors and lastly the paint. Since paint can be mixed to match anything whereas rug and fabric colors are more limited. I like the paint too but not with that tile or rug.

My first thought was I love the wall color! But, I agree the color isn't right with the rug. It's easier to change the wall color but I'd keep the boldness! I see you like many styles. Your art is a fun mix. I think eclectic comfort is your style. How about a small round acrylic coffee table and a silver arc lamp over the sofa? Your collection of art on the big blank wall would look super. For the wall color, the blue, gold or red match from the rug would look great.

Victoria, if you are going coastal casual and working with textures, then you can select a paint first since your working from a neutral pattern. Check out Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. My clients absolutely fall in love with this color.

How do you use this room? I know you you said it's a living room but I don't see a TV in here. When it comes to furniture arrangement, I'm having a hard time understanding the layout of the room. Any chance you could give us a quick sketch and measurements and another photo of what the sectional is looking at?

It seems like the pros all agree to choose your furnishings first, the paint last. Since you plan to use a seagrass rug and you still want an accent wall, look to your terra cotta floor. The deep rust tones would be a nice accent to all the neutral beige. Then terra cotta pillows with a few deep blue pillows for that beachy look.

I very much agree with Inner Visions that if the pink is out, then the color of that gorgeous rustic floor should be the starting point of color decisions and that a terra cotta accent wall would be stunning.

The white wall in the above pic needs help. It seems not to have a sufficiently strong focal point and has been "filled in" with art. I would think about buying a large sideboard-type piece to put on the left side of the wall, or buy something large enough to be centered on the wall without looking puny.

I would suggest to keep the wall color and the rug, save u a bit money, find a gold or silver framed large Mirror will be all you need:)

Red walls don't say "comfy". That is why bulls attack it. Blue or green or cream, or anything that goes with the rest of the decor would be comfy.

I like your idea about using a neutral grass cloth area rug. It will keep the look more informal. I also like the terra cotta color on the wall as opposed to the hot pink, which it translated in pictures. I would now work on the walls. I'm not a fan of spreading out art all over a wall. Either group them to simulate one large painting instead. If you are using the cabinet on the large wall, don't forget to decorate the top of it. Use greens, a vase and maybe one of your pictures just leaning against the wall to one side.

Thank you all for your expert advice! The wall color has got to go..husband hates it..I am also getting rid of the oriental which does not work in this open airy beachy feel home..I will go slowly as I am a bit overwhelmed and want everything done yesterday :-)

Keitha,Devine designs,mcbriec, after taking spare tiles to store today the rug will be charcoal..picks up a lot of the color in the floor and blends beautifully with the 1/2 thick indigo grout. Thanks for all your help! Happy 4th!

Since you have a lot of art look for a common color in them or a color that would contrast them to stand out. You might balance the warmth of the terracotta with a cool color like sage or take a light shade of ochre from the tile. The main thing is to get lots of samples to paint on cardboard then try them in your room.

Kathleen MK, never mind paint on cardboard, I am going to pain a square of grey on e wall and then paint different colors on it..the light in is room can make a white look black. I can't afford to make anymore mistakes LOL!

I like the floor....paint color is way too dark for this setting as is.....tone down the walls to maybe another color and pick out a more neutral carpet ....something that would not fight with the floor

meh4, the carpet will be a charcoal color..blends beautifully with the color in many tiles and the half in grout in between them...not sure which wall color yet..my husband and I can't seem to agree on them but I like SW dried thyme or SW rain washed or quietude..we got rid of the original wall color which was orange

You have a beautiful space but those accent walls are fighting with it. The floors are beautiful too. Pick your rug first and then fill in. I would keep the space all neutral but varying the tones on the same chart a bit.

The rug is going to be a charcoal natural fiber rug. I brought some extra floor times with me to the store yesterday...charcoal looks great...then a deep chocolate brown if I can't find the right charcoal..not sure about wall yet...

Not to give you more ideas, but while you are platying around with furniture placement, have you tried splitting up the sectional facing soem of it out and using the 2 armless pieces to create an adjacent seating. then you don't have to have the whole sofa in one place or against the wall. Buy yourself some sliders and get afriend to come help you play around with it.The other thing you can try is hire a decorator by the hour to help you make your final decisions and give you ideas. The paint color is going to be the easiest, once you decide the rug for that nice tile floor. Good luck.

I think that I would keep the wall color the same as the existing walls around this area but maybe throw in a funky red pillow for accent.. then you can use some of the red that you like.

Even I find the present wall color to be decent and good-looking, and I would suggest not to change it. Instead you can change other items that are present within the room to complement the wall color well.

I wanted to show you a room painted to be nuetral for a cream microfiber sofa pair. It had the matching armless chair I already mentioned above.I think if you went neutral on your walls and higlighted the tile colors you can bring in the colors of the tiles (manyand varied) and then use some stronger accent colors for art work, pillows, While I used burgundys and plums, you could go into oranges/browns/greens etc. As everyone said, use your rug as your color palette. Here is my photo. The color is from Sherwin Williams SW 6155- rice grain. of course you can go lighter or darker from the same color strip.
