Need help with fridge space

Cross posted in Home Dec and Conversations

We just moved into a builder house. I want to modify the cabinet above the fridge to 24” deep and add side panels for a counter depth fridge but......

1. The space is not wide enough at 37.5” unless I go to a 33” fridge.

2. I can only find one 33” fridge with the options I want....a GE...not sure if I can even actually see it in person.

It would still be tight but would this look stupid......have just one side panel (3/4”) on the counter side but not the wall side?

Beyond the double door pantry is a niche with a desk and on the other side of the window a small table and chairs....people wouldnt really ever congregate in that area as the great room is at the other end. Thanks!

    28.5”

You can't do a counter depth fridge there because your wall is 28.5" deep and you need space to be able to open the fridge door more than 90 degrees so you can take out the shelves to clean them. A counter depth fridge measures between 25-28" deep, meaning it won't clear the wall.

What I would recommend if that is the pantry is knocking the wall down and making the pantry less deep .

    I had a similar situation...

You don't need two panels since you have the 28" wall. The wall will serve a the other panel. Your refrigerator will stick out beyond the panel and the wall. A second panel would be lost! I've included a few photos.

Don't do a counter depth fridge if you don't have to, you lose a lot of cu. feet. I hope this helps...good luck!

I don't think it will look weird. The wall will act as the other panel. As someone else mentioned I don't think a counter depth fridge will work due to the pantry wall depth. In my previous house the fridge was "floating" at the end of the cabinets and it accentuated all the imperfections in our 70's house. We enclosed the fridge and built out the cabinet above with high quality plywood. Instead of stopping the side panel at the face of the cabinets, we extended it to the edge of the fridge side walls. In other words the entire side of the full depth fridge was hidden from view, but the doors could open fully to remove drawers. It wasn't exactly the "counter depth" look, but I thought it was the next best thing. I don't have a picture of it on the computer, but if I can find one on my other computer I'll upload it later.

With the 28.5" wall you need a standard depth fridge.
You could go with counter depth, and pull it away from the back wall a bit so the door will open, but that sort of defeats the whole purpose of counter depth...

Since you can only fit a 33" wide in there, it makes perfect sense to go standard depth. They hold a lot!
