Nice blooms, Kim! I love the color. It certainly looks reasonable to be Jackmanii. Do you hard prune each year in really early spring (before it leafs out) down to about 3 buds per stem? If not, Jackmanii is one that blooms on new growth each year, and so if you prune it, it sends out a bunch of new stems and so you have more blooms and they tend to be arranged over the whole plant. A sprinkle of rose food (similar wants to clematis) or alfalfa meal in the spring and then mulch around the plant to help keep soil evenly moist will help increase potential for bloom as well. My hard prune clematis end up the same height as they started when I hard prune each year, so don't be afraid that you will harm the plant.

I see other trellises; what are your plans for them? The gladiolis is lovely. I don't grow them because it is too cold to overwinter them here, and I am too busy in the fall to dig them reliably. But I like yours.

hi nh babs, thanks for responding. I'm in tx outside Austin. I believe it's zone 8b. I usually cut back only once at the end of summer.I can't wait to go out in the morning and prune it. I'm not shy about pruning. i have another clematis on the obelisk and so far every year I just get a few blooms, bright pink unknown id. I hard prune it also end of season. Funny story about that gladiola. Once again about 6 or 7 years ago I was at a local nursery and was looking for glad bulbs. the owner said he didn't have any but he did have an old established one that really just needed to be divided. So I went home and my lazy ass didn't divide it just stuck it in the ground. I finally divided it this year and gave a few people in my neighborhood several plants. Not only that, this year I had a 2nd one just like that with many more to come. Did I mention he gave it to me for free!! As far as the rest of the garden the usual annuals, zinnias, 4 oclocks, cosmos. Hanging baskets petunias, verbenas. Have a couple of dinner plate dahlias coming up. moon flowers and some really pretty ruffled morning glories. this is all in my front yard, no hoa for me. thank goodness. obviously new hampshire? my family used to have a "camp" on beaver lake in derry. i'm originally from mass. nice chatting babs. kim
