Design Problems

We are redoing a “new to us home” and I have some unconventional items to contend with, as you will see in the pictures. The home has a big fake rock floor to ceiling fireplace, a partial fake rock wall floor to ceiling 4’ wide, and knotty pine ceilings in family room, dining room, and half of the kitchen. All of the proceeding items my husband doesn’t want changed because he loves them. My issue is I have no idea what counters to pick for my space. I think I want granite, but have no idea on what color or design to make the home seem a bit more modern. I definitely don’t want my home to seem like a lodge. I want to make it more modern looking. As you will notice the carpets have been torn up, and we added darker bamboo floors, and have installed some of the white shaker cabinets. There will be an island starting from in the kitchen area, with the flat drywall ceiling, to area with wood ceiling. The two different ceilings is stressing me out, but it’s our only option without tearing them out, which my husband says no. Any ideas to help me pick a counter top color/design to modernize the space/home, would be greatly appreciated.

Go with a solid color or one with very little patterning to avoid getting too busy with all those finishes. I would avoid most granites as they tend to be busy. I would also consider drywalling over that fireplace.

Yes, those darker bamboo floors are in every room upstairs, except the laundry and bathrooms.

That area doesn’t look like it has room for an island... will you still have 42” on either side? Will you have dining area in that room off the kitchen too?

I think a white quartz would help keep it bright with all the dark woods in there.

We tore down a wall between where the small kitchen use to be and an adjacent room where they had the only kitchen table/seating area. The kitchen will now be where the small original kitchen was located, and an island added between the two rooms, with a few other cabinets in the other room. That’s where my two different ceiling issues come into play. The large table area is another room, which will be a dining room.

Just a plain white quartz? Or one with some design or something?

Do you have any inspiration photos of styles you like? If you don’t mind going simple with the backsplash you could incorporate a bit more pattern...

Check out Steel Grey Granite leathered finish.

I love the different marbles most of all, but husband says no because of etching, which I would hate too. Love Fantasy Brown granite, and a few other granites that look more like marble, but have been warned of etching in those too! Didn’t know if they would work anyway.

There are many quartzes that resemble marble. One of those with a subtle vein would work.

I will have to look up the Steel Grey granite. My husband does like the polished counters, and I’m okay with polished only if it won’t show finger prints all the time!

After checking Steel Grey granite is the one my husband has picked out that he likes most! He likes it polished though, and I think it goes by a different name in our area.

did the steel gray look like this?

you could also look at some quartzite

Oh no when I looked up steel grey, it looks like what they call silver pearl here. Has like silver and black shiny particles. Your picture looks totally different. I like the choices you have, but have been told that the quartzite/granites will all etch. I love the look of most quartzite/granites, but would be upset if they started etching. To be honest I really haven’t liked most quartz, even though most choose them now, because to me most look so fake next to granite/quartzite.

Do you have no say? Only what DH likes? You do NOT want a busy granite of a busy anything for your countertops! You have quite enough going on in this house already, Don't waste your money on white quartzite - use Glacier White Corian. It is inexpensive, clean and will go with anything, including all that stone/knotty pine. And it will also go with however you redecorate after you kill your husband in his sleep some night!

Beth: could you tell me the names of the quartzites you have pictured? Do you think those colors go best in our home, with what I have to work around?

that middle one is Monte Cristo

granite does not etch. marbles etch because they are made of calcite. quartzite is made of quartz, and sometimes has calcite deposits, but not always. it just depends on the kind you get. quartzite is actually harder than granite.

some of the 'harder' quartzite are Taj Majal, Sea Pearl and Macuabas. these don't have the high amount of calcite deposits which would cause etching and staining. Doesn't mean they won't, they are less likely that others w/higher calcite quantities.

any of your darker granites won't etch or stain. i've got the one w/the golds/tans/blacks and whites, and that thing is bulletproof.

so, don't be afraid at some of the quartzite options

    here's Taj

    sea pearl

and Black Forest, or Black Horse is a really nice black/white. if you got this honed or leathered, it'd be quite a statement piece

these are some pre fab granites

take a glass tile with you when looking. try using the corner of the slab (or see if they have a spare piece that broke off) and use the end to scratch the tile like the pic. marble is not stronger than glass and will leave a powdery residue on it. granite/quartzite will actually put a scratch in the glass.

lemon juice....few drops of lemon juice on the stone,,let it sit for 5 mins, wipe away. did it etch or stain? if not, you're good.

here is your steel gray granite, also called black pearl. it's 'meh'.

Honed Jet Mist or Virginia Mist is a nice black granite. doing the honed or leathered would give you a dark granite w/o the fingerprint issues.

White Macaubas quartzite. it's beautiful,,,may be a little pricey.

White Princess Granite. this one is honed. some of the white granites can stain, so use a good sealer and wipe up spills quickly.

Thank you everyone for all the tips and ideas. No, my husband doesn’t get to decide everything! I just want us to both be happy & love our new home. Finally moving out into the country with 5 acres, on a lake. We are so excited!! I don’t feel the quartzites pictured show too much of a pattern to add in our space, does everyone else??
With three kiddos still at home, I don’t want to have to worry about every little spill on my counters. I want a counter that will still look great years from now. I will put a sealer on my counters every year. I have been told to actually do this three times, once a year.

To MY eyes they have a lot of pattern. I would hesitate to use any of those, I would much prefer solid white.

White quartz would be the last material I would consider for your counter top, it will look completely out of place in your house. Soapstone would go with all the natural finishes. Or some of the darker options that Beth posted.

If she goes with black she will have near black floors and black counters in an already dark space.
Our floors are more brown in person with streaks of black.

I have Fantasy Brown Quartzite in a leathered finish in my kitchen, and in three years, there is not a single etch, scratch or stain. I tested a sample well before purchasing it.

sorry for the bad pic of steel grey leather finish but it looks much different than the polished finish. Black pearl is a different granite and not an "aka"with a bit more warmth. IMHO both of these look much better leathered. Both finishes are super durable (Black Pearl and steel grey granites) specifically. The other pic here is a Soapstone look alike quartz in suede by Cosentino

my bad. steel gray is actually a very dark Baltic Brown look alike.

Black Pearl is a very dark Verde Butterly or Peacock lookalike, as well as a darker version of Blue Pearl

Thanks Erica, I will have to check them out too. What did you mean by Black Pearl is not an “aka”?

i said another name (aka) for steel gray is black pearl. it's a different granite altogether. aka stands for also known as

Pics of a leathered counter (enhanced with product to make it darker) light cabs and dark hardware...
This is with a chiseled edge but I wouldn't recommend chisel in your kitchen with everything else going on in the space.

Thanks everyone! I will look all of these up and try to come to a decision. Plan on going back to the granite store to make my decision final next week. Wish me luck!
