please help bring some modern to this kitchen?

My husband loves this house, it is in a neighborhood close to kids’ schools and his office, it has everything we needed... except it’s very French country? The kitchen has Chicago brick, and country style... what I love about the house is that it has high ceilings, hardwood pine floors... I like modern contemporary - I am wondering how to bring in contemporary colors for paint and cabinets, new backsplash and what to use to make this a happier kitchen.... What would you do? We just bought this beautiful home and don’t want to spend too much remodeling....help! Thank you!

At first glance I would say paint the cupboards pale gray or soft white, or maybe top and bottom cupboards 2 diff colours... is the worktop ok? Looks like granite? Not sure on the floor....

Thing is the style of the cupboard is very traditional so paint isn't going to change it much..... hmmmm

Sasha, the granite has gray and black around shades of reds ... along with the orange floor... the had the walls painted a bright yellowish green ... it’s ... well... not really even very traditional... it’s sort of out of sync?

If you replace anything I would start with the light fixtures. Then paint your new colors and do the backsplash.

You really need to replace the floors, they are about as far from contemporary as you can get and brick floors are so hard to keep clean.

    1. built tv unit out.

    2. new cabinet doors

    3. remove the crown molding and corbels

    4. replace all light fixtures

    5. replace the hood.

    6. whitewash the floor or float engineered hardwood over it.

    7. paint the walls

    8. replace the backsplash

    9. just start over lol.

10k for granite? We're just getting ours for less than half that!!

How much of the things in the picture belong to the previous owner? Presume that isn't your things?

Sasha,,10 was for the granite and the backsplash, including demo, tile and install.

I can get granite for 1800, installed,,, but if she wants a more modern quartz, then yes, 6K is average. she has a large kitchen with a funky shaped double island. More expensive to do.

This kitchen is never going to be “contemporary”, but you CAN downplay some of the most obvious “french country” vibes. Get rid of any and all swirly metal... chandelier, wall metal art, etc. Paint cabinets a pale gray, walls in creamy white, modern looking barstools, perhaps a hammered metal backsplash. The floor could use an oriental rug or two...sleek window coverings. The orange brick tile floor will fade away so you won’t even notice it. In the kitchen, think top down/bottom up shades. The house looks like its got great bones, a perfect location, and remember you have kids so be sure to get stuff that will hold up. Enjoy this next stage of your journey!

yes sasha. dollars. look at the size of her kitchen. she wants modern. quartz is 6K minimum for her cabs, plus those funky shaped islands. she could do granite for 3-4K, depending on what she picked. that 10k estimate also included the backsplash. cost of demo of the old stuff, buying new tile, and getting it installed.

I can get 9', pre fab granite countertop for $350 us dollars, and have it installed for another $800. But that's here in Calif where we have a ton of stone yards and easy access from China. someone in the mountains of Wyoming will not get that same price. why are you debating me on this? is the OP in England? your husband is in the granite industry and you still paid 5K for your granite? That's high.

With all due respect, trying to turn the current kitchen into a modern is like trying to put a square in a triangle.

    It needs a whole remodel.

It's going to be very difficult to make it modern, but it sure could be toned down and look nice. Some inspiration

I would not bother painting those cabs. I might yank some out of there. (Pretend you're DeVol) You can simplify by losing all the "french" accents, change lighting and backsplash. More neutral drapes, rugs, accents will make quite a bit of difference. Won't be modern but it can be current. Counters are a bigger expense. Maybe wait for them while you plan and save. Good luck!

It's actually quite a nice kitchen, better than some of the suggested inspiration pics, and it doesn't appear to need remodeling. It's just not the style you want.

If you hate it, get out of your contract if you can, unless you have a spare $70-100K lying around looking for something to do. Or else plan to learn to like having a nice kitchen that isn't on-trend at the moment.

Personally, I love the brick floors. They look real, are they? Take out all the removable stuff, curtains, wrought iron decor, change out some of the lighting, but imho, this isn’t a bad kitchen. I would try to work with the existing stuff and make it yours.

I agree with the old gray mare! Add a fun accent wall and some abstract art and at least you will be eclectic and fun!

I think the kitchen could be modified if everything wasn't so colorful and dark. Try to get it to be Mediterranean eclectic. New fixtures and Ann Sloane chalk paint for the cabinets are in your future.

There were plenty of modernist houses here built with brick, paver, or stone floors in the kitchens or concrete block or brick as part of the vertical wall surfaces. I think what various people are interpreting as "modern" needs to be defined.

First I would get rid of those black chairs ...then paint all wood a pale color ..off white ..., then look again . Oh the backsplash has to go replace it with the same granite ..so not to introduce another color ...should do the trick . Then paint black chairs ..and see if you can use them . I don't mind black ...it's just in your house it won't work .

Update so far. 7 months and only picked out color....from lime green to ballet white... haven’t gotten far...

I love the brick, and even though your cabinets are traditional, you can go for a great mix! Awesome contemporary hardware and bring some fun abstract art into the mix and industrial shelving and you are a NewOrleans kitchen!!
