Door Locks and Control 4

We had a Schlage Connect Model BE469 Deadbolt Lock with Alarm installed, and our Control 4 Installer said this lock was not compatible with Control 4, and would not allow remote locking and unlocking of the door. He replaced it with a Schlage Connect Model BE468 Deadbolt Lock, claiming this is now compatible. Both locks have the same Z-Wave radio installed. The second lock installed seems to be a cheaper version of the initial one, identical but without the built-in alarm.

Is the installer correct that the BE468 is compatible but the BE469 is not?

Is there a better lock/door lock combination that is compatible with Control 4?

    Control4 uses several different protocols including Z-Wave. Both the Schlage BE468 and BE469 work with Z-Wave.

    Schlage BE468 is Grade 2, BE469 is Grade 1. You are right, BE469 is higher quality. I would push for more info from installer because they have all the hands-on experience. A Grade 1 deadbolt would be preferable.

    Control 4 is a home automation system that has one very specific problem in my mind: their rep has to set up the system, and any time you want to make the slightest change in the house systems, you have to call them to come out and re-program the control center. Only they can do it. Obviously this ensures continued income on their part. To me it's the opposite of what the rest of the electronics industry is doing, i.e. opening things up, making them customer friendly and programmable. Imagine if you had to call your cell phone provider and pay a fee every time you wanted an app installed on your phone? It's not a good business model.

    Hi Guys -- so we are actually Control4 dealers and yes it is true when you install a Colntrol4 system you do have to call that same install company or another one just like it to make some changes. However, there are also many changes you can make on your own including lighting scenes, HVAC settings, Media Playlists, Security Arm/Disarm etc through their "When-then" user based programming. It doesn't give you access to the whole system but it gives enough to keep the average user from getting in trouble. Let me give you just one example of why these systems are locked up they way they are. So we have a client that spent a large sum of money for KGM (a lighting design company) to program lighting scenes in their home. After finally refusing to pay the final bill until we gave him access to the programming software, we finally acquiesced. What does he do? He accidentally deletes a lighting scene that is a sub routine in about 60 other scenes in his home. Now he doesn't realize what he did and blames us for the lighting scenes not working correctly. Luckily there is a log of all programming changes in our software so we should him under his user name how he deleted the scene. He ended up having to pay for an extra 20 labor hours of programming to fix the lighting scene.

    In regards to all electronics moving away from this, this isn't quite true. Creston, AMX, Elan, Savant, RTI, Control4, URC and others are all professional Home Automation systems that you can buy and have install by a professional installation company. These are pro systems that can be installed in anywhere from a simple single room home theater to a 50,000sq ft estate and more.

    New to most folks is the DIY version of Home Automation including ecosystems like Smart Things, HomeKit, Works with Nest, Alexa etc. Amazon, Google and Apple are really pushing the awareness of this category through their Echo, Google Asst and Homepod products. Most of the DIY stuff can do many things the Pro systems can like: call lighting scenes, adjust T-stats, draw shades, etc. The main category the DIY stuff lacks is Audio/Video which the Pro system can handle quite well. The other is scale-- a lot of the DIY systems just can't be pushed beyond a house larger than 6,000 ft or so.

    Specifically answering the question on the lock-- maybe what he meant was that he installed a Zigbee lock instead which is a competing wireless protocol to Z-wave? The native wireless communication of Control4 is Zigbee. However, starting with any Control4 system with 2.10 firmware and above they can also communicate to Z-wave plus devices with about $140 or so in extra antennas and other parts.

    No it was definitely a Z wave lock.

    Ok well if what you had was a Z-wave lock and not a Z-wave plus lock he would be correct with his install. The reason for this is that Control4 cannot interface with most Z-wave devices without a 3rd party network connected z-wave hub. You may have not had one of those in the install or he didn't know how to put one in. If it was a Z-wave plus device (2nd gen z-wave) then he could interface with it directly as long as the $140 plus extra parts were included and the firmware was 2.10 or above.

    Neither locks are z-wave plus according to any documentation I can find.

    Schlage Connect locks **ARE** Z-Wave.

    As I said, Schlage Connect locks are Z-Wave. Z-Wave Plus is backwards compatible with Z-Wave.

    You don't need Control4 to control those locks. Check out the Vera Controllers - No monthly fee, do your own programming. You can get Control4 to control Vera which will control those Schlage locks, or better yet, use Vera directly.

    Ron, correct, they are z-wave, but these two in particular are not z-wave plus which is the 2nd gen of z-wave with increased capabilities, and transmit strength.

    strategery, I'm assuming the OP is already past the point of return in bypassing the Control4, and obviously he's using more than just door locks and likely using some zigbee devices since that's the default protocol for Control4.

    Thank you everyone. I am a she, not a he. lol

    We spoke to our security guy and he is coming on Thursday to program the locks with his system so problem solved. In fact, this is the lock he recommends to his customers.
