Hi Mark. The original barn was dismantled and some of the original board planks were unusable. We sourced similar wood from a lumber salvage yard and mixed it in with the original boards to line the interior. The original poles, beams and rafters were reinstalled and exposed to the interior. Since we were required to construct the exterior with fire treated materials we wanted to make sure it felt like you were walking into the original feel and materials of the barn on the inside.

The barn framing that you see was no longer suitable to support the barn - it was over-spanned for today's codes and in California we have seismic lateral loads to consider. There were no original walls...just boards nailed on boards so we framed the barn like a house and lined the interior with plywood for lateral shear, painted it black and put the historic boards against it. We used 2x8 rafters I believe for the roof, insulated them and put the original corrugated metal roof on the inside with the smaller 2x4 rafters so it looked like the ceiling of the original barn. Wondering if you could find someone that wants to remove an old barn, dismantle it and use the pieces to rebuild a new one. Accounting for waste and rotten material if your barn is X square feet, maybe you dismantle one thats 1.5X for plenty of material.
