Problem with Weigela?

Southern RI, zone 6b. Pictured are a group of 3 "Emerald Gaiety" Weigela, mature plants at least 10 years old. They have always thrived here, growing together into a single mass many years ago. This spring, as seen in the photos, the center portions of the plants have lost all their foliage, leaving a ring of what appears to be healthy foliage around the perimeter.

There has been no change in the site conditions, and other plants in the vicinity are doing fine. We have another patch of this cultivar about 60 or 70 feet distant, and it too is looking good. Not sure if there is a problem here or not. Anyone?
