Kitchen design help

last modified: 8 years ago

We have a beautiful large kitchen space but I'm at a loss as to which way the kitchen island should face. In the current plans it faces the dining and alfresco porch, but it means the kitchen island is nearly 2m from the bench tops and the configuration felt all wrong. So we have re designed it and I like it with the bench running the other way, it looks more streamlined with the kitchen. However others are saying it needs to face the dining not the sitting room.....Any help would be appreciated.

That's going to be a very dark kitchen. And I will admit I'm heavily biased against stoves on islands. Why ruin your views outside with a massive vent hood? Move the stove to an exterior wall, and put the sink (if you have to) on the island. But I like the horizontal orientation (first pic). No corner pantry though.

Thanks Sina for your feedback. I've come up with something Im really happy with and island toward outlook as suggested. Got rid of corner pantry and integrated fridge, with pantry next to it so all 450 doors full height.

Yes I agree, and it does now.... It’s more a square but the space and space around it is so large feel this works better.

Another idea would be to make the island a little thinner and make it an L shaped island.

Im just looking at that now....thanks :)

If you keep the island orientation square like your last sketch I would flip the sink and DW. With the sink on the corner it will look and function rather awkwardly. Are you working w a KD? For a new build house such as this it is always wise. Good luck!

However I'm noticing that there will be a lot of congestion at the sink with the refrigerator (and not a lot of counter space where you need it because essentially you have staging items from fridge/prep and clean up all in the same spot)...again, a good KD to the rescue :)

Thanks for that, I just moved the sink to the left so I had more bench space to prep next to it, but will look into it again. We are building with a project home builder which use pre designed homes...but we've done a full custom design - we've designed it over the past year with lots of input from architect / builder and designer friends...my Mum was a KD so came up with the final design once she saw what I originally had..cant' believe I almost did the corner pantry and no flowing benches...Was just worried the bench was too big but the whole space of kitchen, sitting room, dining and lounge is 10m x 10m so I think the island should be okay. Their is also glass doors, fixed windows, louvres, and a raked ceiling with glass windows so should be quite open and light...Huge process!

Ha ha, just saw your message. Yes was thinking that about space. Island bench is 2m wide so will give 1100 to prep next to it..

In stead of a double sink, I made two seperate sinks on either side of the island. It works very well and no congestion.
Just make sure you have some workspace next to them.

Thanks for that, Ill see how that works.

One larger sink will always be better than smaller sinks (think large roasting pans/cookie sheets, etc). I hope your mom spends more time on this with you - I am seeing a few other issues that need to be addressed (I am not a KD so I appreciate the level of thought and planning they bring to the process).

This new article just popped up today and I thought of you...isn’t this your last island layout (for the most part?
