Saw a shrub-on-a-standard earlier today with a significant size mismatch at the graft union, the stem of the scion (Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa') has a diameter of 1" or slightly larger, the understock has a diameter of 3/4" or slightly less. The scion looks very healthy and vigorous.
Is this a guarantee for a graft failure down the road?
Or will the understock catch up to the scion over the years?
