If choosing a marble for the surface tops it is a good idea to go with a honed finish. Because marble is a calcium carbonate based material, a honed surface is much less likely to show marks from scratching and etching. Etching is an instant chemical reaction that take place when acidic material come in contact with the stone surface. So take special care not to have items that contain acid on marble tops. Acidic items would include, citrus fruit, cosmetics, tomatoes, wine and other alcohols. Wipe up all spills immediately and only use cleaners specified for use on marble. The issue with etching is important because it is inevitable that etching will happen.
