Yes, you can use crown molding with shiplap, but you’ll have to take the crown off and put it back up after the shiplap is up. I’m not sure shiplap works with your more modern fireplace stone. I could be wrong.

If I put up the shiplap do I have to put trim in the corners? Would it look unfinished or odd to have the exposed ends of the shiplap? thanks for any help!

I think wallpaper would be a better choice. There's no reason you'd get tired of it faster than you would shiplap, and it's much easier to install and remove or update if you do.

Be sure the walls are properly prepped and it'll come off with little damage. Shiplap requires nails, and adjusting the crown, and...well, stuff.

Honestly, I think all you need is a nice piece of art. I wouldn't use shiplap (don't think it's a good match with your home/decor) or wallpaper (and I love wallpaper).

I agree with torreykm. The shiplap and wallpaper seem out of place to me.

But really, I kid. It can look just fine. The above examples are NOT formal homes. They are country homes. They ARE rustic kinda, and they don't have formal crown molding.

Shiplap isn't bad in the right spot. But people are just tired of it because it's trendy and often done where it doesn't make sense--like an accent wall.

Anglophilia, relating crown molding with shiplap to a diamond tiara on a hoodie is too funny! Have to agree with you on this one.

Your fireplace is large and kind of an accent wall in itself. I think another accent wall would be too much.

Having spent the past 40 years in a "coastal" area for at least a few weeks, I have yet to see a house that looks anything like that first picture. Geeze - all those pot lights, all that...well, just EVERYTHING. Not my coast!

As mentioned above, a large, beautiful painting would best fit your needs. Your house is very nicely decorated but signs such as "home" are an outdated trend and this one doesn't really look good stuck on top of the mirror. I'm afraid the valance also doesn't add anything to the decor and is rarely done any more.

ingrid, I forgot the home sign was there lol! I keep meaning to take it down -it is literally just propped up there! :) We significantly downsized 4 years ago once 2 of the 3 kids graduated college and we found this lake property. I have so much decor that I can't use and every so often I find something boxed up and try to see if it "fits". LOL I know the home sign doesnt! :) as for the valance - not a huge fan of them in general, just felt I needed something to tie in the kitchen (matching valance) plus the wall was so vast - prior to the mirror. maybe I'll try without but worried it will look too modern.

Ingrid is correct about the trendy verbal word art signs: dream, eat,, sleep, and live, laugh love. However, your HOME sign is reminiscent of the Home Sweet Home signs of the past . Your placement over the family table is appropriate for sentimentality of family gatherings. What compelled you to purchase it when you did? Do you fall for trends or was there another reason? If your answer is just to fill a space, then trash it. If you bought it because this is the family home and the kids are growing up and leaving, then..?.. My husband travels for work and he enjoys seeing his PB Home pillow at the entryway -

Since your home is a lake house, perhaps you can take a great photo of a lake and use that as your wall art?

Consider accent walls using reclaimed barn wood from a vendor such as Plank and Mill. We did this on our family room accent wall. It's so thinly milled that it looks fine at the point where it meets our crown moulding.
