Change the drapery and the rods. Change the chandelier to somerhing more modern, the pictre on the wall shouldbe bold in terms of colour and style. As for the carpeting it has to go, do you have hardwood floors? Try a more modern rug. Move the sofa it looks cramped.

Hi cinbu -- You have some nice things, it's just that they don't have enough in common to play nicely together. You can have one to three rather dominant colors, and a few minor players, but more than that won't look cohesive. I love the grey and white bedding and curtains, but there's no grey or white in the painting above the bed. Nor do I see the blue from your beautiful rug anywhere else. Perhaps it's the lighting in your photos, and I'm sorry if that's all it is, but the palate I see lacks definition and direction.

If you love the Klimt, maybe that's a place to draw colors from and stay within that range.

As for the chandelier, how adventurous are you? I'd paint it all the colors in your painting and perhaps embellish it further, depending who will be sleeping under it. Just keep to the same group of colors.

The style of the home is Spanish and originally I painted the yellow wall to match a bright colored comforter which had to be returned because I was deathly allergic to it ;) I wanted the room to have some color, and love the rug, wall picture and probably need to keep the light since the hubbie just hung it up lol. Ok so maybe a different paint color - what else?

I like your bed and bedding,but you need some punches of color for sure. I new light fixture would be nice,something more contemporary. Don't forget that you don't need to have "bookends ",like your night tables,you can use only one.I you pop up the color on the walls too.

The curtains look skimpy and the rods are not substantial with the heavy dark furniture. Can the rug and art work elsewhere in your home? Would the chandy look good in a foyer or dining room? Sometimes you just need to start over. Maybe you can work with the rug or with the art, but establish a direction and a color plan. We can't see enough of the room, but it looks like there are even more windows than we see. Can you attach more images?

Thanks for all the comments! Does it seem like the artwork fits well there above the bed? If so, I like the idea of using that as the pallet/base and working from there. Love the idea of painting the chandelier as I like the anthropologie type style :)

Ok I took some of your suggestions and moved the rug out, pulled the curtains closer, took out the couch. I took the shams off in exchange for plain ones. Thoughts? Do the table lights need to go too? Here are more pics.. Thank you!! This is fun and so helpful!

If you're going to keep the mirror, center it on that wall raising it and lowering the chandelier so you get reflection of something beautiful in the mirror. Your room will be more cohesive if all the draperies match. The mix of styles and hanging heights, plus the lack of pairs at the windows is not working. My eye sees the art as too contemporary and boxy overall to work with the curvy headboard and the more traditional feeling of other items in the space. Maybe it would work better on the wall where the mirror is with a chair or chaise under it. I don't have a problem with the table lamps though. You might get lighter, less yellow, shades for them.

Get rid of the yellow paint as it doesn't flow with the colour of the bed. Match all the curtains. What type of feel are you going for? If it is country change the artwork, maybe replace with something softer or a mirror. Have you thought of a wallpaper feature wall behind the bed which would eliminate the need for artwork. Maybe go with neutral, muted shades of blue and then the richness of the timber bed would give the restful warmth.

Looks lots better already. I would paint all the walls one color - a light blue gray or blue pulling from the art. I would change out the drapes on the sliding doors to match the white drapes elsewhere in the room. The mirror should be shifted more away from the door, more into the room. I would add some pillows/shams in a print, that included the blue in the art.

Wow it's hard to answer the question on what theme/ look I'm going for - Thats probably part of the problem. I like the store anthropologie a lot how they mix some new and old - the home is Spanish style - so that combination is kind of what I'm going for :)

Paint and new matching drapes all hung at the same height are all this room needs.

I would suggest adding to the pillows on the bed as well, three smaller white in the back, two that are similar in color to the wall, and the small one finally in the front.

@cinbu, I sneaked into your bedroom with my paint brush while you were out and did my magic. ;-) Seriously, Photoshop Elements allowed me to virtually paint your room and hang new curtains. I changed out the art to go with the new wall color, and because I think three smaller pieces might work better than one long piece.

Change wall color- mirror has to go, that plant has to go, & thanks for thaking out that rug. If you like the couch/chair, you can put a smaller one infront of your bed, just for sitting room if thats what you was wanting. Good luck. A little bit helps & goes a long way

I would recommend putting in roman shades and removing the drapery. I really think that will open the space up . I wouls also suggest getting pillows to match to really tie the space together.

Ok the plant is out! the mirror - I like it on that wall because it reflects the light from the french doors, and it's good "day light' to check my makeup, etc. but someone suggested centering it on the wall. should it be the same height as the picture over the bed so that feels more 'even' ?

Please get rid of the pic above the bed. Does not look appealing in that space - could perhaps try another wall in bedroom or hallway. Need more layers, colors, textures on your bedding. The bedroom should be comfortable but fun as well. :) Few more interesting items on bedside tables.

Mirror's center should be 60" above the floor if it is not hanging above a piece of furniture.

Deco is right on the height of the mirror. The centers of mirrors and art should be roughly eye level. If you're keeping the plant in the corner, center the mirror on the remaining part of the wall, like so:

Your room seems to get lots of light, so I think you can go much darker and more saturated on the walls. I agree that the art doesn't quite work over the headboard.

LOL, cinbu. I've already painted the room four times. I think I would do the whole room in the teal. It can handle it. It would be very dramatic and cozy at the same time.

The room looks great! maybe a few tweeks. The color is slightly off.. Maybe head away from the greener side of yellow and more towards softer wheat. I had a color specialist help me once and she said do colors that look good on YOU! Not many people can pull of this shade of yellow.

I like the art itself.. but not above your bed. You have such a romantic headboard with great lines I would consider something without such strong borders, maybe something that replicates the arch.




I would center the night stands and lamps right in front of the windows.. I like those lamps.. just with a bigger lampshade.

Much nicer with the love seat, rug & art work removed. The beautiful bed & angled wall are the eye catchers. Suggest larger bedside tables so that lamps can be centered in front of windows with room for plants, books, & nick nacks. Not sure about the white curtains. Appreciate you may be going for the breezy tropical feel being in a Spanish style home but doubt they darken the room much. They look a bit skimpy on skinny rods. Pleated/ Roman shades may blend in better and be more practical.

A grayed blue wall color will give your room a serene, romantic look. I added more drapery to the room to soften it. I changed the throw blanket to a color in the Klimt artwork. By keeping your decor items to a minimum, your bed will become center stage in the room. Best of luck to you. You are making great progress.

IMHO if you do a rug, make it a somewhat larger than the one Nancy posted. You don't want it to look like you just brought it from another location in the house, but as though it is part of the overall design, and so might need to allow more of the bed to sit on it. A very large bed is too imposing for a small rug.

Here's the mirror wall in dark teal so you can get a sense of what it would look like to paint the whole room.

It's only paint, cinbu. Cheap if you do it yourself. If you go deep, be sure to get the stuff with the primer mixed in.

This has been a fun thread to follow. I was bothered at first by the white spread with the dark furniture. But changing the wall color to a deeper shade, either the teal or taupe seems to make a big difference I agree with changing the artwork above the bed. Even though I like contemporary art and like to mix things, too, I think your beautiful headboard deserves a something more in keeping with the style of the headboard. You could go with two vertical pictures instead of the horizontal one. Art.com has very reasonably priced artwork, and you can get it framed or unframed. I heard Nate Berkus said once that an accent wall looks like you ran out of paint. So maybe, as suggested above, paint the walls all the same color and definitely have the same fabric on all window treatments. I also, agree with the need for more toss pillows to bring in other colors in the room. The one pillow looks rather lonely. You have made some great changes already. Keep plugging away.

The style of the settee doesn't go as well as the bench that was photo-shopped in, which has the romantic feel to go with the curve of the headboard. Love the teal for the walls, and the natural sculptures suggested to replace the art above your bed are lovely. Your art piece could go on another wall in the room. It just doesn't go we'll above the curved headboard. If you keep the soft white curtains, stitch a casing so they fit the rods tighter, and you could pull them back to one side to compliment the curve of the headboard.

Wow! This room is shaping up! Love the darker teal tone with the white bedspread and additional pillows on the bed. Your room allows all the walls to be painted that teal color. Go for it! Someone has posted some examples of metal type artwork. Perfect! Now I would soften the lampshade to a softer teal (oh approximately 7 shades lighter) than the wall color to soften the space and bring in a romantic note. You can keep the siver base or go white for a fresh crisp look.

Actually I would do without a pic aboe the bed. Competes with the gorgeous light fixture. The curve of the bed is artwork in and of itself as well. Simplicity has a beauty all its own. They say when you want to advertise the beauty of an object (ie diamond ring) display it and it alone. It allows you to keep your focus strictly on its own sense of style versus competing with something else. Make sense? Keep is simple and classy. :)

This is a lot late but I would like to offer my advice if you are still up to it.

Walls: The yellow tone, though relaxing does not go with the sorta mid - century style that I see in your room. To compliment the bedspread and pillows that you have, I would recommend a mild tone of hazel for a comfortable setting, or even a egg white tone if you want to spice things up a bit (and match my later rug colour), it depends on your personality.

Flooring: Especially with carpeted floors and area rug really brings in the right mix to a room, yours isn't exactly working. Though it may be the lighting or angle of your photos, I personally think that the area rug you have isn't working out. The colour looks tinted as if it is a hand me down or bad thrift shop buy. If it suits your liking then definitely keep it in, but if you are going to, add a blue vase with a succulent plant, or the liking. Otherwise, throw it out and get a new one and a white round one would suit instead of a structured rectangle.

Bed: Though your bed does have that great homey look to it, I recommend a different one with a white cushioned headboard. Also, the two white pillows you have are completely hidden! Make sure to get smaller ones up front, or a larger back one. Also, make sure to change your side tables if you change the bed!

Art: Your art above the bed is a beautiful style but it just doesn't match OR stand out. If you feel like keeping it then create a light bedroom to give it the oomph it needs. If not, I recommend switching it to something you love. Oh, you love flowers? Make some giant paper flowers from paper and paste them above...you know the drill.

Lighting: Find the colour that you used the most inside this room, maybe the floor since you may not have incorporated that, and it is hard and expensive to change. Or the metallic you have on the ceiling. Then use this colour on the curtains.

P.S: I recommend changing the vase of the plant you have on entry.

You still need to change the chandelier. A bowl style that projects light to the ceiling is easier on the eyes.
