A blast from the past...

A 1964 NYT article about African Violets of that time. Don't normally follow the NYT, but this one was relevant to vintage violets.

Thanks for the list. I will print it for a friend who has raised show violets continuously since 1971 who would probably enjoy seeing this. Joanne

I do not think it is a wish list,,,, it is like a school roster from 100 years ago,,, they are all gone and you just wish you had a chance to know them,,,,

There is a slight possibility one or two are being grown by someone, since some people still grow several of the original ten A&R hybrids, which are even older. Moreover, there used to be a continuously updated list of vintage violets in the African Violet Magazine by Barbara Elkin.

Furthermore, here is a link regarding Richter's Violet hybrids from ten years ago: http://www.designbycandy.com/personal/candysviolets/default/vintage.htm

I found one of Richter's hybrids on Bloomin Jungle's list from a few years ago. Not sure if she still has it:

Bon-bon (843) 12/17/1956 (F. Richter) Double pink. Girl foliage. Semiminiature

I was starting to feel a little sad that I not only don't have any of these but I have never had any of these. Gratefully, Irina made me feel a little better. Im still going to keep my eye out though.

There is someone who grows the vintage violet Tipt (F. Richter) [Single large lavender/purple tips. Standard] present-day on African Violet Traders on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/africanviolettraders/

I am not sure that everything that is gone forever was worth keeping... I hope the best of the best stayed in culture.

We live in "today" - and we do not keep a pristine "Texas Cadillac" in our garage hoping to make a kill 50 years later,

I had an early Kent Stork called Blue Barry that was exceptional. I like the early AVs to trace ancestry, or for historical reasons, or scientific interest. I was not around in vintage days. I know some people who were. Knowing some of the vintage names has sparked some fascinating conversations when I mention them to people as memory joggers. This keeps the hobby interesting and is a way to track historical development.

So many of today's hybrids are so derivative, so "me, too," and sport so consistently, they are not interesting, at least not to me.

The saintpaulia ancestry project database is a good place to research genetic parents. I don't need to own the old ones. Photos are good enough. Some people do like to grow series or species. It would be interesting to know what people grow and why. This is part of the learning process for those of us who are relatively new and respect the work of early hybridizers. I appreciate people who know their violets and can tell me why a specific hybridizer's work is so important. Joanne

Ancestry project is a work of vigilantes...not approved by the Powers...

Photos do not require watering - but it is nice to have a Volkmann plant and Tinari plant and White Madonna ... to touch it and see how far and how close we are to the AVs from yesteryear... Some we probably will never keep nowadays.

And with sporting... some of these complex flowering things - if it blooms true - you feel like you won the lottery....
