size should be genetic ... but in hosta ... they can be manipulated to larger size thru excessive fertilizer ... e.g. i swear everything at van wades was twice or 3 times larger than they grew naturally in my sand ... i think he got his osmacote delivered by the semi load.. lol ..

however ... when i experimented with hyperfertilization ... they rotted over winter ... i think they didnt slow down and harden off in fall .... plus the whole winter pot dilemma ....

and ... finally ... i seem to recall .. in the way back machine... harry abel was bonsai'ing hosta ... go figure on that.. i have no recall of the result ... boy i haven't thought of him in decades ...

Second year. So far it does look to be on smaller side of your measure

perhaps you ought to not think of those in the pot.. as a permanent planting ... just switch them out when they outgrow the pot .. of course.. that presumes you nail the overwintering variables ... ken

I like Ken suggestions. This one overwintered in the pot but i think will put more in the ground this season to overwinter. Too many variables to controI I feel.

Thank you all. I actually bought 5 minis, probably because I was tired and couldn’t make up my mind. But now I have to decide which 3 will look in attractive proportion with each other. The rest will go in the ground. Besides Munchkin Fire, I bought Pureheart, Sun Mouse, Cameo, and Church Mouse. I planned on one gold, one variegated, and one blue. The nursery didn’t have any smaller blues.

I saw the photos in the Hosta Library, but the only one that showed scale is the one with someone’s hand in it. Does anyone happen to know why the HL does not put height and width in their descriptions? A few have it but not all.

Yes, plan is to put anything that grows too big into the garden. Take a division or trade out with something else I have.

I know some hostas seem to prefer a pot, too. I was ready to throw out scruffy Peanut last spring, and threw it in a plastic pot, in whatever potting soil I happen to have around, where it flourished. After overwintering under a pine tree on its side, the top of its pot covered with hardware cloth, it looks great now.

I was reading more threads last night about overwintering, plus media. I am undecided yet about how I will overwinter these, since I can’t store the glazed ceramic pot outside. Plan was to put them in the attached garage, closer to the outside. But I can always unpot them and put them in my raised bed veggie garden / holding bed for winter. That’s where I put things I am not ready to plant, and mostly they do well. That’s where the 2 dormant Fragrant Blues I bought in early November on sale went last fall.

I am going to mix up a small batch of media in the next few days. Planning to use Promix, small pine bark chips, and perlite.
