Fireblight. Airbourne disease and not much to do about it except buying disease resistant varieties. Carve out and burn the trimmings. All affected areas.

Ah, that sucks. OK, thanks for identifying it. I just read up on it and it sounds like nasty stuff. I just pruned all the infected branches out, but like 1/3rd of each tree had it so I'm probably too late. Guess I'll fine out soon enough.

you can remove up to 1/3 of the tree and it should bounce back. if you are not opposed to chemical treatments here is how you can help fight it:

basic copper sulfate (Kocide) or an antibiotic (Agrimycin) to reduce infection. Applications of Agrimycin need to begin at the start of blooming and continue every 3-4 days during the bloom period. Application of Kocide should begin at bloom and continue every 7 days during bloom. Re-application following rain may be needed.

Too late for chemicals this year, but for next year. copper is also good if you get cedar apple rust.
