Verizon? Booooo!
I initiated Verizon cable and internet service less than a year ago. One location, 1 set top box, 1 remote, 1 modem, 1 router -- all provided by Verizon. The remote stopped working today. I have to use the TV (not cable) remote to turn it on or adjust volume, but nothing else works. I cannot change channels, get the channel guide, access anything I DVR'd or On Demand. Nada from Verizon that I'm paying for. So, I just finished a Live Chat and it was determined I needed a new remote. Oh, it's out of warranty, but I can buy a new one for $14.99. Huh? I'm paying a monthly fee for cable service that doesn't include replacement of Verizon-supplied equipment? But wait, when I said that on the live chat, all of a sudden, she's trying to help me and will send me a new one. I wonder what will happen if the set top box fails?

Cable companies are terrible. I can't wait until the day they no longer exist b/c everyone is streaming.
We like Hulu Live TV. Try it, and tell Verizon where they can go!

Did you try replacing the batteries in the remote? Sometimes the solution is as simple as that.

Original Author8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago4katz as long as I have cable I’ll pay the cable company for the modem and router. In the past the cable company always pointed to my modem as the source of problems. I bought several replacements only to have problems again. I gave up and gave in. Which is one reason I was incensed that Verizon wanted me to pay for a replacement remote. Universal remotes are no longer universal. The cable companies saw to that. I should have asked Verizon which non Verizon remotes will work with the Verizon cable box.
I do mostly stream however there are network shows I like AND the ability to DVR so I can skip the commercials. Ive made great progress just by limiting my activated cable outlets and buying a limited package. You should see the disappointment in guests’ faces when I tell them nope no ESPN or Fox Cable News. I’m snipping away at the cord little by little. I went to a cutting thecable presentation a couple of weeks ago. There are Soooo many options but combining them to get what you’re used to having gets pricey. Why can’t I be satisfied with the 4 channels I grew up with?
Beagles, what does Hulu Live TV offer that Hulu does not?
badger, first thing I did was replace batteries AND didn’t throw out the old ones because I was pretty sure the symptoms didn’t indicate bad batteries.
Bah humbug!
ETA: I just looked a review of Hulu Live and it sounds promising with the ability to DVR to the cloud. A little extra buys more cloud storage and ability to FF thru commercials.
Now I need internet options that bypass cable companies.... Not sure it’s possible since I live in a condo.

Just checked Hulu Live and all I can get for my zip code is 3 Fox channels, NBC and whatever this logo represents - no idea what it is. Not even sort of worth it for me. I do better than that with antennae for free.

It makes you want to scream.
Interestingly, when I have returned a set top box, they don't ask for the remote to be returned. They give you a new remote with the new set top box.

Our house alarm has gone off three times in the last month or two, naturally at 1 or 2 am, due to the fact that our phone service is through our cable company. I guess it's time to go back to the hated phone company for the land line.
We tried looking into Hulu and couldn't get any information without signing up for a free trial, which we didn't want to do.

Original Author8 years agoBeagles, when Hulu Live allows you to log in as having a TV service, don’t you actually have to have a TV service?
No. Hulu is your TV service provider. So I go on the ABC app and it says "Choose your TV provider" and I select Hulu and put in my login credentials and I get in just as if i had Dish network or one of the other terrible traditional cable companies.

We’ve had Dish Network for a good 8 or 9 years now and never have issues. I get almost all the same channels as Hulu live offers and a ton of storage for 32/month. Our fee was increased two months ago from 27/mo but that was the first increase since we’ve had it.

Another major benefit of Hulu Live is the ability to log in anywhere. Want to sit outside and watch on your iPad--- you can. On vacation on a foreign country, just sign in.
I don't need boxes on my TVs, I just have either smart TVs or Roku or Apple TVs and download the Hulu app and I am good to go.
And of course you can get TV on an unlimited number of devices (although I think you can only stream on two separate devices simultaneously unless you pay for an upgraded plan).

so beagles explain this to me a bit. Are you saying that even though the Hulu website says I can only watch 4 channels live based on my zip code, that I can work around that by using a specific channel app like ABC and watch live? I'm not understanding how if that's what you mean.
- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
Yes, that is correct.
For example, my dad likes to watch Jeopardy and some sports on ABC but Hulu Live in our area does not have ABC. So, when Jeopardy or his sports are on, he just zips over to the ABC app, and is logged in automatically because we signed in with Hulu as our TV provider.
He then watches his Jeopardy or sport directly on the ABC app.
We also downloaded the PBS app b/c there are way more cooking shows on the app than on Hulu.
Also, I would bet that when it tells you that you can only watch "4 channels live," that is referring to the local package only. You should also get full access to live TV through Hulu for all the other channels in the package, like ESPN, HGTV, Lifetime, and a long list of others. We have like four or six live local TV channels, plus can watch all those other channels live as well.
I just went into my Hulu and here is a screen shot. It's showing the Golf channel live right now and you can see my guide on the side. When I scroll down, I have CNN, CNBC, the Disney Channel, E!, the Food Network, and a ton of others.

Thanks for that explanation. Yes I should have said the live local channels because honestly I'm not interested in the rest. In Chicago an antenna picked up more than I needed/wanted but here in the mountains it's slim pickings and very weather dependent. One of many adjustments!

I Have been contemplating getting rid of Verizon Fios for our tv (need it for internet) because we are paying for a fortune when we watch very few channels. The only reason I haven’t cut the cord is that dh and my boys are sports fanatics and I was worried that we’d lose access to some sporting events since each provider offers different sports access. I’ve been thinking about it since January but wanted to first wait for the Olympics to be over, but then it was March Madness, and then it was college lacrosse. And then when I thought we were in the clear, our hometown Caps decided to mak their first appearance in the Stanley Cup!! So my goal this summer is to finally rid of us Verizon FIOS for tv. I think the plan is that we will buy a digital antenna for local channels, then most likely go with Sling (one of their sports packages). I can always add on YouTube TV or Hulu - we can have more than one. Even having more than one will still be cheaper than Verizon!
DLM, have you looked at getting a digital antenna for your mountain home? That might provide you with the local channels you want access to. One thing I’m spoiled by is that we are in between the Wash DC and the Baltimore networks for coverage so with Verizon, we actually get access to both, so two ABC stations, two CBS stations, etc. For the most part, we watch the DC network stations (their news programming is much better) but Baltimore provides better weather and traffic reporting for our area. I also have several PBS stations to choose from-that’s my favorite programming. It’s kind of nice having the option to choose so it will be weird if we have to give that up!

DLM2000 you can always try the 2 week free trial with Hulu and download the apps of other channels to see if you can get the programming you want. No harm in seeing if it works for you.

Original Author8 years agoI’m in a 2nd floor condo looking up into woods. Digital antennas work for the bedrooms and LR which face the woods. However, I have no TV in the LR and no reception in the TV viewing den.
4kids - I think we’re neighbors! I’m between DC Baltimore and Annapolis

MIL just started with Sling because she wanted HGTV. She previously was just using an antenna. You need to look at Hulu, Sling, YouTube TV, to see which offers the content/channels you want.
Our neighborhood was wired for Google Fiber, so we have had that since about November. It's OK, not the wonder it was proposed to be. And it's not much cheaper than Spectrum.

Delilah, as soon as I read your post, I guessed where you probably live and then noticed you have the place I guessed in your profile! I have a few friends who live there (Piney Orchard). I’m in the Annapolis area but having grown up closer to DC, I consider myself more of a DC suburban girl than a Bal’more area native. I definitely don’t have that Bal’more twang, hon

I still use Comcast for internet and have no complaints. I’ve found services like Sling, DirectTVNow, etc do not offer the full array of network channels for regular TV. Fortunately I can just use a Mohu Leaf antenna at home but that doesn’t work at the lake. Not much of a loss as about the only things big we watch on network TV is the morning news.
