I would paint the walls either BM Rockport gray or Chelsea gray. I would also paint the fireplace white as I like a more modern and clean look.

Two things that will impact the colors you are proposing: the cream tiles on the fireplace, and the pinky-beige floor color. You'll have to be careful selecting your white and grey tones so that they blend well.

i’d paint walls and FP white in view of black furniture. I see a need for lots of light tones to counterbalance black leather.

I do not think white would be an improvement on the fireplace with all the beige floors. Lower the T.V to proper viewing height and choose a pale greige color for the walls and them if you want a different color for the fireplace see what works with the walls. Is that fireplace surround wood ? I would also choose a lighter colored TV stand with all that dark furniture. Get a nice piece of art aboe the fireplace and keep wedding pics in a bedroom or hallway or in an album on the coffee table.

Not a chance that that dated look should happen. Don’t paint fireplaces, and stay away from gray. What needs to change is the Giant Black Blob that is stealing all of the light out of the room.

My whole vision was to paint the fireplace and the back wall that the fireplace is on white. Then i was thinking gray for the rest of the room? I am definitely getting rid of the dark brown sectional and the TV Stand, I was going to do a mirror above the fireplace where the wedding picture. Also the bamboo wood colored floors will stay.

my main thought is that paint will change nothing about that fireplace -- most of it appears to be cream tile, and the style is in the woodwork. I'm just not sure you'd get much return on the effort.

By not mentioning your furniture is going, our comments may be totally useless. I would not recommend white paint w/o considering furniture, drapery, trim work. Advice is as good as info provided.

I think you're on the right track but my guess is that you don't like the look of that fireplace surround/mantle overall. Painting it white will tone down that dated baroque-ish look but isn't going to have a huge impact. You may want to consider replacing the surround and mantle for a cleaner look. It should not be an overly huge or expensive undertaking.

my family room is attached to the kitchen will it flow with these cabinets and tiles as the color walls I pick will be in the kitchen too.

Keeping kitchen as is , I was wondering if gray would clash with the cabinets too. .... trying to find a balance to update the family room and making it blend with kitchen

I would go with greige or taupe instead gray.

If you are keeping the kitchen as is, then do not paint the fireplace white and paint the walls grey. It will clash with the kitchen.
