Help, where do I start?

All, we just replaced our carpet with wood floors and now I am having trouble laying

out the rooms in my house and deciding on rugs. To keep it simple, this is our family

room. I need a different rug, as this one is only there to protect the floors from my

dog. I am keeping my drapes and will recover the two barrel chairs for sure. I want to stay

within the tones of the drapes for the rug? Solid or muted pattern? Any other layout

help would also be appreciated. I want to replace the lamps on the cabinets and the

coffee table as well. I need two runners for the hallway and am not sure if I need to get in the same pattern as the family room or just in the same tones.

Your room looks fairly traditional, and I would opt for a larger and beautiful Persian carpet for this room.

I'm sorry, but I really don't care for those drapes in the room and how they're hung. I can't see the fireplace very well, but it seems to have a more reddish color and the drapes have more cool colors. I would put up Roman shades or something similar where you don't have that triangular fall of the curtains, perhaps in a creamy color with a subtle flower pattern in warm colors, pink, red, yellow, which will tie in with the Persian carpet. You can then recover the chairs in a stripe, solid or pattern (the pattern should have a different size than the curtains) in complementary colors. I would personally choose stripes or possibly a check. The pillow colors can also be pulled from the rug. The lamps look a little strict and boring, and instead of the mirror there I would find a lovely painting as a focal point, and prettier lamps with round, lighter-colored shades. I don't really love that particular painting over the fireplace, since it's somewhat lacking in impact, but art is very personal, and I hesitate to advise. It's a very nice room, by the way.

Right now the room feels a bit dark and 90's. The room just needs some updating. The curtains are not bad, however I would suggest hanging them on a rod and instead if tying them back, simply push them to the side. The barrel chairs are great though I would suggest reupholstering them in a simple pattern. You can add a solid accent pillow to each chair to make them look more finished. I don't mind the rug, unless there is something wrong with it. I can't really tell. I would suggest a simple, square, glass top coffee table with gold legs. On the buffet table, I would suggest hanging a way bigger mirror. Perhaps with a simple gold frame to match the legs on the coffee table. The lamps are too overwhelming. You can replace them with something like candles, a vase or other lamps, but smaller and a brighter color base. I may be seeing things, but it seems like the curtains have a gorgeous pinkish and turquoise color. Play off the colors (mostly the lighter colors to brighten up the room) on the curtains for the entire room and add coordinating throw pillows on the couch.

Rachel, we were unable to hang curtains on a rod as the corner of the window on the left abuts to a corner. I love my drapes and will not be replacing them. I plan on moving the rug to our bedroom and getting one a slight bit bigger such as 10x 13 instead of the 9x12. Also, it is a little off on the color, limestone. I agree with replacing the mirror and the lamps; they don't work here. My main issue is finding a rug and deciding if I should replace the sofa or recover. The sofa is Henredon so has good bones, but it is low. If I recover, I would have them make the back pillows taller. I appreciate your input.

Rachel, You are right. The last time the furniture was reupholstered was the 90s! Definitely, time for a redo.
