Air layering fig trunk questions!

last modified: 8 years ago

I’ve got a 2 year old Petite Negra that is about 3 1/2 ft tall with no branching. One straight trunk through and through, 6 figs. 4 on top and 2 roughly in the middle. It’s standing on its own but seems weak. I’m thinking I want to air layer it somewhere in the middle so I can have a lower center of gravity on both trees (if it can be done). My questions are:

will the original tree live after the top is removed so I can re train it more to my liking?

if I air layer it will the tree keep its fig ripening integrity on both trees the following season?

I can pin a photo here in the morning, I don’t have one as of now.
