'Lichfield Angel'... first bloom...

This rose opened today it's first bloom of the season, and I managed to capture the exact colour with my mobile phone camera. If you've not had this rose before I think it's well worth giving it a try, shrub or climber, it has that usual 2 dimension...

Love the form! There's something so charming about a blush center and white outer petals.

It's a beautiful pastel Austin, I like the peachy-pink color to it...

Thanks so much. I do have to stake some of the canes on this rose as they will flop over a bit, but later on the blooms seem to become less full and don't flop...

Yours is much pinker than mine. Mine is much more cream colored. I do admit I adore this rose. It’s prob the best white Austin. Although Winchester cathedral is really beautiful too.

Any updates on this rose? I ordered three bareroots and they’ll be here in a few days. I’m debating on whether to train them on an obelisk as climbers or keep them as bushes (plant three in a group 18” apart). hiws their shade tolerance? Any photos will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I transferred my rose to a large trough container with trellis support, as I found it wanted to climb and the heavy blooms weighed down the plant somewhat, so they often looked at the ground... I think this way they will be looking more at me.. it's also very low thorn so easy to train on support...

You might get a different experience,.. I like growing roses in groups of 3 too..

Thanks for confirming my suspicion Marlorena! I’ll set up an obelisk for them since they want to climb, plus I’m in zone 8, here all my Austins tend to get taller than the descriptions. I grouped Charlotte, Alnwick, Olivia, Carding Mill, and Lady of shalott in the 3-in-1 form and love how they look. Do you think Desdemona has the same tendency to climb?

Mine is pretty large. I cut it back a little in spring but it grows right back. I have it against a tall wire fence so it can kind meander up there.

Sultry Jasmine, I kept cutting my Lady of Shalott back but they kept growing back. They are probably the least successful ones in terms of grouping/training as bush form among all Austins I have. Still love them though :)

zzzone… if Desdemona needs to reach for the light it will be inclined to send up a cane that will look like a climber... I'm not saying it's a climbing sport but it's certainly capable of shooting a thick cane upwards if need be.. but I have 4 in full sun and they're staying about 4 foot x 3 so far..

..look at the huge bloom it produced.. like a monster..

..it went to the top of a 6 foot trellis with other roses..

Marlorena, your photos made me drool...the blooms are so gorgeous!!! I am going to set up obelisks for both Lichfield Angel and Desdemona. I will still plant three of the same type together (triangle form) at the foot of the obelisk to maximize the Look (fullness).

Are both of yours in sunny spots? Do you have any idea which one may be slightly more shade tolerant?

LoS is definitely a climber here. I have her espaliered on a 10ft wide fence. Ditto for Jude the Obscure. LA doesnt climb near as much as those two do but its big.

Marolena, what a gorgeous group of roses on the trellis!!

Thanks Sultry Jasmine. I guess Austin website listed LOS as both shrub and climber indicated that it has the climber DNA/character. I might eventually have to move them if I cannot control their height successfully.

Thanks for sharing that info Marlorena. For some reason my gut feeling is Lichfield Angel can probably handle more sun (or intensity of sun) so I would try that and see what happens. A little shade for Desdemona might encourage a little pinkish tone on the blooms at the beginning stage, which I like and hope.
