Wall Mounted Toilets

Hello,

Building a home and would like to install wall mounted toilets. I love the look and being able to wash the floor under it, making cleaning a bit easier. The problem is I no nothing about these toilets.... where is the flusher, do you need extra support in the wall for mounting, is installation more dollars, and of course how do they hold up. I want to have a basic idea of whats what before heading over to the plumbing showroom. Any & All suggestions, thoughts, help, advice welcome! Thank you

I have Toto wall hung toilets. They are more expensive to buy and install.

My plumber has installed them and considers them a massive PITA. You will be charged a lot for installation.

Hard to beat the clean look of those wall hung toilets. In Europe you see them in middle of th ero ad homes. Here you hardly see them in super high end homes. It’s a shame.

Modern design only has a toehold in the US. And that is a decidedly modern look. It’s blooming in popularity though, so the real barrier is the difficulty and giant expense.

It's odd, considering that we were making them (although not with a hidden tank) as long ago as the 1920s. Adamsez Ltd catalog listing from 1927 (one of several models):

But they never seem to have caught on here till recently, just like the glass shower screen, also available at that time from Kohler and others. Perhaps people used to think they were too commercial-looking, or industrial when industrial wasn't cool.

We had them in Europe and I thought they were brilliant. The tanks, if that’s what it are, were enclosed in a partial wall and the flusher was a button. I always wondered how the plumbing would be accessed but we never had a problem.

We have one in our master bath and it has worked well for us. Easy to keep clean, fits nicely in the space. Flusher is on the wall behind the toilet.

If you decide to go ahead with wall hung toilets ensure that it is clearly marked on your plans. Also make sure you specifically mention any 'special' inclusions to your GC right from the beginning of your project. Keep a check on your bathroom areas as work is in progress. I have seen them built either of two ways - with a built out behind the toilet concealing the tank or probably the better way, with a cupboard access outside the bathroom. Remember there are weight restrictions on their use. A lot of hospitals are starting to use this type of toilet for ease of cleaning and bacteria control.
