Outdated hallway and bedroom built ins

Any ideas on how to fix or change these? There are two in the hallway and in another room. They are made out of plywood, some 2x4s, and probably other scrap wood. Do we lightly sand the paint and repaint or just pull it all out and put in new cabinets? There's also the contractor route or someone to build new ones but we want to see what we can do before we go that way

Put mirror on back side of shelving.

Maybe cut out shelf while leaving 1" on both sides to put a glass shelf instead.

Put lighting in & above shelf. Put a trim piece/valance in front of light.

Add trim picture frame on doors

Fresh coat of paint on top of trim/ all over.

New hardware

Or,

Replace.

I would think about paneling. Here are some pics for inspiration. Without knowing how handy you are not sure if this is something you could do yourself or not. They are super easy to try and do without spending much money. Just google how to add paneling to plywood doors. You could also try habitat for humanity restore to look for some on a budget. Applying baseboard and crown molding to the top will also provide a more built in polished look. Here are some photos for inspiration.
