one should research shades before knowing the answers to these questions. all shade companies have different materials. some say they are perfectly private, but with a light on in the room you can usually see something. it varies with lighting a lot. i've designed with and sold solar shades for many years, and looks and guarantees can be deceiving. best way to tell is to buy a small sample and try it out in your particular area.
