Why haven't I heard of these nasty little creatures before??!

I went outside this morning to water my plants, and found this gross-looking spit on the bottom of one of my Madame Lemoine Lilac leaves. I thought wtf is that, and looked online to seek out my nemesis. Since then, I've noticed several leaves are damaged. I sprayed the entire Lilac with neem oil. Hopefully that'll help, for now.

Has anyone else dealt with spittlebugs?
