Is my sectional too big?

last modified: 7 years ago

Hello everyone, my new sectional came in today and although I measured and taped an outline of it, I cant help but feel like it’s too big! I honestly did not consider how bulky it was going to be... first time shopping for furniture.

I think the colors work. How do you and DH like it in the room?

I am so glad you got the "tester" size because it is so much easier to deal with. Overall, I like it and it will "ground" your room. I worry just a bit about how dark it is. But you have to judge that in the space with the "total" look. With a coffee table a good bit will be covered, so if you love it, great. What is the material?

When it first came in he thought it was perfect and me not so much, but then again it arrived exactly when I was heading off to work. So my initial thoughts were to freak out over the warmer tones in it. So I didn't have enough time to actually play with it and actually look at it. Meanwhile my DH texted me all 8 hours of my shift to tell me how much he liked it lol When I came home it was late and did not have the lighting to help me determine whether I liked it or not, but woke up early and now I can say I like it:)

Hey Flo Mangan it is 100% Polypropylene. Not sure what that means. Made in Turkey.

OK, also, remember every carpet has a "carpet direction" which means it will look a bit brighter in one direction and darker in the other, so you can turn 180 degrees and get a different look. Might want to try that out.

OK that is a synthetic manmade fiber and it is a bit less durable than other synthetic fibers, however, it is stain resistant and low cost and in your situation probably a great choice since you will have spills and traffic patterns. I would reverse the rug every 3-6 months so it doesn't get flat in some areas like where people's feet sit on it -- that kind of thing.

A good pad under it will help it last longer as well.

Yes, I noticed that it does have a darker side and I put that side where it’s more expose to light. Overall I really Ike it and going to wait for 4th July sales. In the meantime I’m tempted to order one more sample. Something a little different. Trying to be open-minded.

It looks great! The polypropylene is extremely easy to care for so I think you will enjoy that aspect of it.

    Katinparadise, I sure like that!

I like but is that hides? I don’t recommend hides for this heavy use space. But i love the shapes and color variations. It looks fun too!

I have that rug and it's not hides, if it is the same as mine. I like it because of the various colors. Two totally different looks from your first sample to the second.

    It's 100% cowhide
    last modified: 6 years ago

Well then it isn't the same as mine, just the same pattern and colors. Sorry.

What is the care they recommend on the cowhide rug? I would think it would be more difficult to keep clean with kids and pets. JMO

I'm a little puzzled that everyone is recommending very drab rugs when gray walls and gray sectional are already in play. I would play the gray off against a rug that has some gray in it but also has warm colors such as terracotta or teal to bring this room to life. Those colors can then be used for paintings, lamps and pillows to liven up this room.

That's what I thought. Cowhide is durable but not for anything except accent rugs IMO. I do like the pattern and colors though. @Denita, can you share your source for your rug and materials? Thanks!

Yes, I purchased it at Haverty's but here is a similar one (same brand, same manufacturer, same item #, 100% wool like mine). This one is showing more of the darker color than mine. I have many more of the cream and gray and much fewer of the taupe. It has been 3 years though since I purchased it. Also, it looks better in person than this link shows.

Those are striking, but I'd prefer less lines. Already straight lines of tile grout, and straight lines of sectional....so imo a rug with movement...if you want almost clear color:

Sorry I’ve been M.I.A, it was a busy week for me. I have decided that this is the rug we want. Its dark enough to be kid/pet friendly and it just works color wise. I guess it’s a little harder for me to visualize it because I have to keep reminding myself that the accent pieces are key.

The sectional looks good. I think if you add some end tables and accessories your living room will stand out more.

Gee, just went back and saw your shag rug... very neutral. If not a lot of lighting for textures to 'show' it might look drab. Add plenty of upper, middle lighting.

I'm already looking for the end tables. I like the idea of round nesting tables in the middle and maybe a C table by the chaise?

I have this C table in my living room. It comes in 4 colors but it's metal so you could paint it any color you like. It's a good size and plenty tall to fit over the arm of the chaise or give leg room underneath it if you pull it up to use a laptop or something.

It's a really lovely c table. Definitely going to consider it. I love the idea of introducing color now and that mint green is so toned down that I think would be perfect. I also came across these tables and really like. I mentioned in an earlier post that I was on the hunt for a nesting table for the center, but really dig these ones. thoughts...? Also added pictures of TV consoles that I think might work. Not sure if the height will be a problem though.

Its big but not necessarily “too” big. It depends on the look ur going after and how you live in the space. If you have a large family (+5) people the perhaps you want everyone to be able to pile on the couch together..if this is your basement then its not to big. If this is your living room and you are going for a smart urban or elegant look the its too big.

add a rug, paint the walls and embrace the crowded look by making it a cave, cosy hangout.

The major mistakes that people make with their TVs are hanging them too high and using consoles that are too short. The consoles you show above will avoid that error unless your TV is uncommonly large. A couple rules of thumb: console should be AT LEAST 25% wider than the TV (longer is usually better) and center of TV should be eye level when you're watching.

    A longer lower console...

Hey Grover, those pictures really helped. I already had a feeling that the TV console was too short and not long enough. We do plan on buying a large T.V but not sure if we want to mount it.

What were your thoughts on the center table?
again thanks for posting the pictures Grover, they really helped:)

I like both coffee tables you posted, Charlett. If you look back to my renderings from June 18, they are totally along the same lines as the ones I Photoshopped in your space.

Every time I see a notification for this thread in my email I rephrase the title in my head to 'Does this sectional make my butt look big?' - makes me giggle every time so thanks Charlett!

Definitely like one C table as i think i posted early on. I also think the nesting tables are more functional than a single table but surely each concept will work. A single table with your sectional configuration tends to sit in middle where only one person can reach the table. So think about how your family will use your room and go from there. Also, try to stay within one style preference. Your sofa is modern not mid century so i would lean towards modern tables and console. I am not saying they should match just be consistent. Especially with your TV console. Do not mount TV. A way to test where the center of your TV should set, take a string from someone sitting and laying on sofa like you are watching TV. Pull the string to the other side of room. Have person hold string at their eye level. Put small piece of painter tape on the wall. That is best viewing spot for center of your TV screen. Measure from floor to tape. Make notes. Then take with you when buying new TV. BUY TV first. Then know height of TV To determine height of console. Get width as groveraxle mentioned approx 25% wider than TV. Have fun!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the great tips and to update you all on how it's coming together. I absolutely love how the rug looks and I'm ready to move on in finding a TV console. like suggested I am planning on purchasing TV first, but trying to decide on color. I think I need to start a new post though, since this one is supposed to be about my large sectional being to big lol sorry, still figuring out how this works.

I like it! Doesn't seem too dark with the light floors. Can you bring it out a little more?

This is one of those paintings you order from China (no lectures, please). You get to pick the size and you're going to need something quite large.

Such a blank slate you can keep the art somewhat subdued, or throw in a pop of color. It can be anything. (as long as it's not tiny stuff!)

Agree, you need a single large piece of art on the wall behind the sectional. No kitschy, small stuff for the best overall look. Measure the wall where the TV will go and put blue tape up on wall to the size of the TV you want. Measure them in stores, because finding the dimensions on line is very difficult. They usually post the "diagonal" size which is bigger than the left to right, bottom to top measurements. Since you have a nice wall for the TV and console, you can do a pretty large TV and console. Just budget will be your limit. Isn't it always!

I'm returning to this rendering to suggest that your art won't need to be huge, that you need to center the sectional on the window wall, and pull the rug out to about here.
