I had a client that purchased Motawi decorative tiles and, to save on cost, I helped her come up with a design using Sonoma Tilemakers field tiles. Sonoma has a beautiful line that offers an array of glazes that will compliment the Motawi. It’s still a little pricey, but not quite as exorbitant as Motawi.

Pratt & Larson as suggested or Encore both are hand made and have a similar look. A Motawi bathroom is my bathroom inspiration but the Encore was expensive enough LOL

We used a combination of sized in the Sonoma Tilemakers tile that coordinated with the Motawi decorative tile as well as the clients countertops.

winchester tile is a handmade tile that is reasonable as well. fireclay tile has "in stock" colors that are very reasonable.

Check out Seneca Tiles from Ohio. Mine were $18 square foot and a stock item, shipped in less than a week from order. They truly look more expensive than the price.

I used Motawi accents with a handmade field tile from Daltile (or was it AO?) many years ago. They probably don't make it any more. We just lugged our accents to the tile store and found something that looked good.

If Mom is near Ann Arbor, go check out Motawi's seconds store (I should add, it's been 15 years since I did the Motawi thing and maybe they don't have that any more..).

Just note how even in the example from Motawi where the field tile is the same as the accent, it ISN'T a perfect match--you have a lot of leeway! :)

I don't know where your mom is located, but if she's using Motawi she might be near Detroit. Pewabic has their summer tent sale in August. They have seconds, overruns, canceled orders, etc. It's a free for all, but with patience she can find fantastic bargains. We did our fireplace for 1/3 of the cost. There designers are available to help at the sale.

I love that bird deco and the color of Motawi field tile in your example photo! We are using a Motawi runner in our bathroom remodel with the same color background. We are pairing it with a subway tile from Sonoma Tilemakers (although we chose a white tile since the deco also has white). Do you have a really good local tile store? We are in SoCal and went to Mission Tile West. A good design consultant can help you choose a field tile that goes with your Motawi deco, but is not so pricy. And there is no substitute for seeing a bunch of samples next to your chosen deco - to help you decide.

Check out Fireclay tiles. They have lots of finishes. Expensive but not outrageous.
