Cuttings are easy to take. I would put them in a ziplock with a titch of water for moisture. I have done that before. I'm sure others will chime in with ideas. I haven't tried splitting one to save roots.

I think a restart from cuttings is the way to go. This time of year, they root very fast and within a month or so, you'll probably have new growth. I think the fastest way to root is in pure perlite. If you can find it, chunky perlite is ideal, but regular perlite is fine. I use a deep pot like this...

I fill it about halfway with perlite, insert the cuttings, set it in a dish of water and keep some water in it all the time. The roots form fast, and they're stronger than water roots as they have the medium to cling to. When you have a mass of roots, shake off excess perlite (it's ok to leave what clings on) and plant them in your regular medium. They take off right away.
