That depends on the rest of your interior!

1. Maybe your room is too white or monochrome. Then lamps are a good way to get an accent in it. I recommend translucent coloured lamps for that reason: They even produce sophisticated light effects. My personal favourite are chinese lanterns!

2. Wall sconce are way more discreet in most cases and therefore a good option if you already have some accents in your room. You'll hardly find them with non-white lampshades. If you intend to use your lamp for a coloured bedroom, go for a wall sconce.

But please don't choose a too discreet one - it would make your room look like a motel room - and you don't plan to open a cheap motel, right?

You're right, the nightstands are a bit boring. I would suggest wall sconce, although they need extra work and have to get mounted. It looks less messy.

Don’t know about the paper lanterns...as for the sconces I was thinking gold so they would pop, like the ones in this photo

Do you feel your bed is romantic? lighting - what direction?... you might... I don't 'get' those sconces at all, but maybe others have seen the rest of the room.
