Red raspberries do well in part shade to full sun, put them out in the open so insects can notice the blossoms. The critical thing about red raspberries is to plant them in a raised area (several inches or more) unless the soil is actually sandy, then they will do well long-term.

The raised bed advice is new to me. My raspberries are planted straight into the native soil and I've not seen any advice on this side of the pond to do otherwise. What is the reason for planting in a raised area?

Fitzgarden, later you also need to find out if you have a June-bearing raspberry or a late variety. This will determine how you are going to prune them. Pruning is easy for late varieties, which produce fruit on this year's canes, but it gets more complicated for June varieties which produce fruit on last year's canes (I'm simplifying it a bit here). But for now, make sure that the site you chose gets plenty of sun.

Once replanted they'll be in position for some years, so it's important to ensure there are no perennial weeds in the area where you put them. Getting rid of ivy is not easy, so I think that where you removed it it is very likely to come back. So it's a good thing you're going to move them from that point of view too.

New York may be different, but here in Western Oregon, red raspberries planted on typical and level soil do not do well long-term because of root disease. The OSU Experimental Station plants their red raspberries in elevated rows. Regional nurseries sell these, calling attention to varieties less prone to root rot.

OP will need to investigate local conditions. Raised beds are not necessary where I am and I've never seen that advice for anywhere in the British Isles. We're just told not to plant where soil might be soggy.

Note that I advised a raised area and not a structural raised bed. This reduces the chance of root rots in otherwise soggy soils.
