Fireplace decor

Was thinking of putting sconces on either side of mirror. I tried putting tall

decorative objects and couldn’t get into it. Ideas in comments. Thoughts?

I love your mirror but it looks like Lovely antique. The sconces look modern. Fun to mix looks but i think a pair of ginger jars might work better for your space.

I need more photos to get a better feel for your room and style. But i selected a jar that has hot modern color and shape to work with the modern fireplace surround and the style of the chairs peaking into the photo. So just starting the conversation

Don't forget scones are permanent while stuff on top of the mantle isn't. We have two of our fireplaces with sconces and one without. They are nice IMO and gives some nice light on that side of the room.

Doesn't look like you need the extra light. Ginger jars, girandoles (if you want to go fancy), classical urns, faux topiary, all a lot easier than rewiring.

Pain in the behind maybe, but not permanent- my husband can attest to this I tried a few things up there and I couldn’t get into it. Plus it’s not a deep mantel at all. It’s not a need extra lighting situation. I just like the way they look, I think.

I can take more pics of the room tomorrow. It’s a 1940s home with very mixed styles. 9ft ceilings. Room opens to a sitting room and kitchen

More pics will help. You could do candle sconces. No wiring. I will post some ideas. With that age house it might be darn near impossible to do wired sconces because typically they used double layered bricks on these fireplace walls. Bbl

Here are some options. You could use battery operated candles with remote controls!

Since the mirror is not doubling anything worth seeing twice, why not work toward replacing it with a beautiful piece of original art by a local artist?

Here is the adjoining room (not going to move the piano. It’s my husbands childhood piano he learned to play on and there isn’t another spot for it)

    Dining room in same area

And here is the living area with fireplace in question. My kids decided to do their own mantel decorating last night. Those chairs are temporary- have custom small swivel chairs going there. Kitchen is to left of this

I would put a couple of tall weighty candlesticks on either side of the mirror and call it good. IMO less is more!

What a beautiful home! You have done a great job and I was going to suggest pulling those two chairs out and angling them toward each other! They look create scale and color-wise in your room. Budding artists too! Very nice art work. Tell them they can sell those!

looks ok. I found some other, similar surrounds like yours if you'd like to see some other options.

As soon as I say your fireplace I thought "cover that in leather..." :)

Strange, maybe, but looks fabulous in my head! (Then I had to dig around online to see if anyone had actually done it!). Call me crazy, I'm okay with that :)

wow. I could do w/o the peacock feathers and all the little things, but that is quite the statement!

Kelly, I think your kids are pretty smart, because they realized that this room is lacking in color. Instead of the mirror, I would choose an interesting original oil painting. The mirror makes the room look rather cold whereas a piece of art would give your pretty room life and color. I wonder if the ornate table with the ornate lamps on top doesn't fight with the rest of the room and your gorgeous dining room.

In considering your mantel and your room, I want a new chandelier in your room to get reflected by your mirror. That would be wonderful. I do like the simplicity of the black, thin candlesticks and like their juxtaposition to your mirror. I am sure you have enough input and I wish you luck in getting the look you love for your room!

I’d love a nice chandelier in there but I live in an old house in south Louisiana - I need that ugly ceiling fan - ha!

the black leather is an interesting suggestion but my husband would NEVER go for it- ever ever ever.

I do like neutrals. The only reason I put a mirror rather than art is bc my adjoining room has a local new Orleans painting that I love. I don’t want to draw any attention away from it. (And it’s too big for the fireplace).

My painting (it’s a separate space but basically the same room)

Not necessarily these sconces but I love this look..

Have you seen the “fandoliers”? Bbl

Here are a few. Btw i LOVE that painting! I noticed it and forgot to mention it. Here are a couple fandoliers. Combination fixture with fans.

    Opps forgot to attach!

The faux leather is just wallpaper, really. And black isn't the only color. I'm glad you understand the look even though it's a no-go.

As far as the chandelier goes, I rather like the look of a plain no-light fan...it reminds me of lazy, hot southern days and mint juleps and such...

I love your mirror--what about a Victorian style sconce with globes? Too ornate?

Yea since my style in general is a bit muted, I’d like to offset the Mirror with something milder.

And yea I like that ceiling fan mint julep correlation!! :)

I’m still leaning towards sconces! Haha

I like your composition. My only suggestion would be to get a slightly larger vase for your branches so they don’t look like it might fall over. Perhaps some sea glass in bottom of container might provide some visual weight. I see you got the new chairs! The look pretty. Might pull them into the space a bit more.

Then you should get the sconces...there are no decor police :) You do you.
