Its heating up, summer is here. The heat reflected from the stucco wall behind the plant is even more heat for the plant to have to deal with. (Bougies can easily handle that kind of heat once established).

What have your temperature and humidity been like?

The plant needs water when small and not yet established, but at the same time you don't want to drown the plant, either. Check the soil with your fingers before watering, go an inch or more down. If the soil feels cool to the touch it still has some moisture in it. You want a little moisture there constantly until the bougie is well established, but not constant sodden conditions.

The temperature and humidity here have been kind of up and down. We just had a week in the upper 60s - lower 70s and now it'll be mostly in the mid 80s for the next two weeks (or so they say ;). Humidity is normally 40-50% during the day and 70+ in the evenings and early morning.

I find that SoCal weather is not as dry as people think it is. Yes, it doesn't rain (and when it does it pours) but dry weather to me means high humidity in the 30- 35% range, even at night.
