Looks much better. What you need to do is pull that one chair into the room - it's presently backed right up to the bookcase. Then I would purchase 6 baskets to go on those shelves to the right (maybe more, depending on the size). That would be

a good spot for kiddies to put their toys away after playtime.

Try angling that chair against the bookcase toward the sofa and bring it in like Angel mentions above. I agree that the rug looks much better. I think your rug is the right size.

Then add a small side table and floor lamp. This is a completely different style in the inspiration pic below, but you see the addition of lighting and small side table complete the chair. A chair sitting by itself is in an unfinished setting (usually).

CDR, I was thinking that there is too much seating as well, but that the loveseat was the one that needs to be removed from the room! OP, how many people use the room at one time? Do you think you can relocate the loveseat to another room?

I agree with others - shifting the rug back so that the feet of the sofa rest on it would be better. Also, is this a child's play room/area? If not, maybe you can consider adding a coffee table.

I think you could do a couple of things:

1) Move the sofa back a little and put the large chair in the corner by the bookcase.

2)Do you use the fireplace? Put the tv to the right of the fireplace and turn the furniture arrangement around. You'd be able to fit a lot more furniture.

here is my downstairs to give you an idea on what I have...

Is that a desk to the right of the fireplace? Or maybe a placeto corral the toys. So send the kids to the park for 3 hours and take everything out of room except the sofas and chairs, TV. Yes, even wall and tabletop accessories. move things around using those great furniture glides you can pick up at home improvement store while moving. Once you have a comfortable layout with play area and traffic flow, reintroduce elements slowly.
Tip, get a cool sheet for lego toys so pick up time is 4 corners and into a bin. No more "ouch" $,!?/:

Try flipping the sofa and the loveseat (if there's enough walk space between the loveseat and the fireplace). That will allow you to pull the chair closer.

I too would totally move out one piece of furniture, if you can.......either love seat or chair. If you have to have the chair in there, move it more towards the corner and it should be at a 45 degree angle.

Looks much better! It looks like the room is fairly big. If it were me (also have small kids), I would flip the furniture so it was facing the fireplace and have the couch pulled off the wall. And then try and create a little kid play area/toy storage area behind the seating area that could be hidden in possibly a console table/ toy organizer behind the couch and in the bookshelf area.

Much better without the chair. That thing is just humongous. If you get new furniture, get smaller stuff. Measure everything and tape it out on the floor before you buy.

The scale of your furniture is what is "off" and loveseats are the bane of good arrangements. Keep that in mind when you look for new stuff.

If I had that living room, I'd point all seating at the fireplace and mount the TV above it. it'll open up the room so much and the fireplace is really lovely to look at.

If you need more seating, replace those two couches with a big corner sectional.

too bad about that screen, but I can see it's temporary. looks like you have a really cute midcentury house, I love that staircase area. one day soon, when the kids are older, you'll get to enjoy it again!

The tv would be too high over the fireplace.

I presume you are going to get that safety hazard by the stairway fixed. Here is what I would ultimately do

1) Put a half wall up along the staircase as a safety and to hang the tv on.

2) Leave the sofa here, as you have it in this photo.

3) place the loveseat where the tv in now.

This way, you can enjoy both the fireplace and the tv and the fireplace is not ignored. You'd have to remove or rebuild the bookcase, but ultimately this is the best solution. Would be worth every penny. Build storage into the wall to house the toys.

You might even be able to keep the chair where it is now, but moved a little to the left.

If you want., you can try moving the tv there and see what I mean. It would feel very nice and open.

For future, please consider furniture that is not so bulky. And this is the next step.....there are just too many small things lying around with no purpose and some a safety hazard. I am cringing at that large glass vase behind the safety screen......I feel it is a safety hazard. Best to remove all decor and start over. Less is more.

The good news is that you seem to sincerely want to improve your space, I know it is challenging with young kids, but it can be done.

There are a lot of interesting elements you could highlight, but they are lost. The large prints on either side of your tv, for example......they could be highlights, but there are so many small items distracting.

Or an L- shape with the window space open with maybe room for for the chair?...I may be the only one who appreciates the positives of big cushy comfy furniture ...especially with little kids....but I think it is worth it to try to make it work ...as smaller furniture just doesn’t offer the same comforts.... no room for cuddly naps or storybook reading...if you do that sort of thing in your living room...

Just to throw my two cents in, it looks like you have two great living spaces, both with a fireplace, TV, sofas and toys. My suggestion would be to pick one room where the focal point is the TV and one where it is the fireplace. I can also say from experience that my life became much more pleasant when I moved all the kids toys out of our living room and kept them all in their rooms or the garage and rotated them in. I don't have extra space for a playroom, but that would be divine! I also rearrange my house all the time, so I'd probably experiment with moving the sectional upstairs! Good luck, and enjoy the process!

CCR design suggestions are on point.

CDR has hit the key here; a pony wall installation of TV at the stairwell and reorienting to engage with the FP. I would have a cabinet maker replace the stone ledge and the drop down door and the one below on the end of the stairwell cabinet with a pre-wired pony wall stained to match the remaining cabinet so you can mount the TV on that end of the cabinet using an articulating arm so it is adjustable. This will protect the kids, enhance the room, eliminate the TV credenza and give you a better arrangement. Your large sofa can go on the wall with the two photo pieces hung 5" above it and one hand's breadth apart. The love can stay at the window.

If you want to save a few dollars, you might be able to get a carpenter to keep this piece and remove the doors and shelves. I can't tell exactly in the space where the tv should go, since I don't have a floor plan. It appears the tv would go somewhere around where the glass doors are and the space to the left of that.

What I suggest you do is to move the furniture in place to set it up and determine the correct location for the tv.

This is how I envision your room. Not to scale, since I don't have measurements. For now, the love seat can go where the chairs are.

That's too nice a built-in to replace or eliminate, but the tacky arrangement you've had to create with the screen can all be replaced by extending matching cabinetry for the TV. I think the shelves and glass door section can remain, with just an addition on the left end to replace the funky stone ledge and provide a TV connection. That places your two focal points, TV & FP, in close proximity for enjoying both with the stairs out of sight and out of reach of curious kiddos. the articulated arm mount will enable you to adjust TV for best viewing, and push it flat when not in use.

It really depends on what your priorities/budget is. If the tv is on a lot, just know if you have it on an articulating arm, that's how it will look most of the time.
