I would try giving it a shot of high Nitrogen; we do it with our youngest trees to force growth. Of course high N will result in growth at the expense of fruit for Meyers

Can you take a close up picture of the mix, also scratch it down about an inch and let me see what the mix looks like that deep? Go right down to where you start to see the roots and take a pic there too...

I would go do what John said. He grows close to 30 Million trees on his Meyer orchards. He knows what he is doing.

John Will nitrogen help on a Meiwa kumquat on Kuharski rootstock to push leaves growth over flowers and drop-offs.

Is it time to water? Or should you let it go drier than it is?

What will you do to protect those roots on top?

John gives great advice and I agree with Steve, but do you think the roots are healthy with the way the mix works and how you are watering it? Nothing is going to work if the roots are in poor shape, so I'm trying to get a feel for the mix and your watering habits. How do you know when it's time to water? How do you check?

To me, it looks like root damage..

John Let me know what happens. I only have one grafted Meiwa but I do have 4 seed grown Meiwa kumquat trees. They are growing very slowly but have most of there leaves still. My seed grown Fukushu just dropped its 3 year old leaf. There are about 5 more leaves in the 2.75 year age range.

I transplanted the tree last year, and yes the roots were in bad shape and there weren’t that many. But I water when the the soil is somewhat dry. I use a bamboo stick and see how dry it is to the touch. I want to avoid overwatering because I have lost a tree from root rot years ago

I'm also interested in forcing my trees to produce leaves. I have many that dropped lots of leaves during this never ending winter and now are only flowering. I want them to produce full healthy canopies to support the fruit. How does one give a high dose of nitrogen? What is considered high? How long do you withhold water? I have Meyers, Limes, and Mandarains.

Karol - I agree with Mike that there must be an under lying problem with your trees, otherwise they would be healthier. You wrote that it is to be expected that the trees health declined after producing 2 fruits. I would argue that a healthy tree would not decline even with many more fruit than that. My Meyers refuse to grow when they have fruit, but it does not cause them to decline in health. Since there are no leaves, it is unlikely that there is a bug issue. It's likely a root problem. Sadly, I don't know what to tell you to do to fix it. The yellowing branch is probably going to die back - it happens regularly to me with any branch that has no leaves. I don't think there is a way to stop it. What type of water do you use? Is it chlorinated? Do you have a water softener? How often are you fertilizing and watering? We need to figure out how to give that tree a chance to grow healthy roots or it will never grow leaves.
