Ok. A garage converted into a family room/man cave and I am in dire Need of immediate help as I just moved everything and I’ve no idea what to do with it. I will attach pics and dimensions please somebody tell me what to do before my wife gets home in three hours. The room is 12 feet wide by 20 feet long and you should be able to see windows and doors. Please help.

Just caught up. Very interesting. Just M well? :)

I think that a lot of people come here asking for advice on rearranging things to look better, and they get the unexpected advice to get rid of stuff. It must be hard to hear sometimes, and not surprising that people don't jump to do it.

Ok, sorry, be away for a bit. So here we go, ANOTHER piece of furniture. But now should have everything I need and don’t need to set the room up.

You may not need to set the room up, but you absolutely need to put a door between it and the rest of the house.

I'm not sure what you just said. Are you calling the rug another piece of furniture? And are you saying you don't need any more help?

No no sorry. The rug isn’t for here. It’s leaning on a TV stand.

I think your wife needs to set a deadline in which this project needs to be completed. If it’s not set up and organized by a certain date, she should take over.

There isn't actually a "project" here because the OP and his wife have different agendas. She wants a house she can be proud of, and he wants a man-cave with all his prized possession on display. Those two objectives are mutually exclusive. That's not to say he should give up his old sofa and his shoe collection, but it is to say they shouldn't be part of her decor. I say again, "Doors R Us."

Is this thread a joke? Come on, Just M . . . over 100 suggestions and no progress except to ADD a piece of furniture? I've been hopefully following along until now. Now just not sure how this dilemma can possibly be for real. If I were a little closer to NY, I'd be tempted to break in with a few of "the girls" and get that d**n brown couch out of there before morning:-)

You said the TV was going upstairs. Fireplace went upstairs, and was thinking that since TV doesn’t get watched much down here, would just use the TV with the security cameras. So why the TV stand?

Please tell us how you feel about the brown part-of-a-sectional. (I sort of wish people would stop calling it a sofa/couch.)

Back in June you said Yes, agree on too much furniture. I’d like to get rid of the dark couch. and also I don’t need 2 couches. On August 5 you said OK, brown couch going on FACEBOOK right now. Hopefully someone around to take it today.

The joke is on us... why anyone is putting more time and effort into this is beyond me as the OP isn't listening. I'm guessing he is showing his buddies this thread and is seeing how many postings he can get with just showing us photos and adding comments that don't make sense. Hope to see you all some where else as I'm out of here..

I agree tedbixby - as there are many posters on Houzz who need the attention. Some of them ask the same questions over and over and don't listen to the responders, thus...the thread gets very long, and Yawn!.

I think it's fun, and funny.

I’ve just spent my morning reading all of this OP’s posts.
Do you have any stylish friends or relatives that seem interested in helping? Otherwise, I may need to move to LI and befriend your wife! ;-)

8 weeks and none of the recommendations were followed. This is either a test or a joke. I'm right behind tedbixby-

It gets worse with every picture. I swear he is trolling.

He had an earlier thread in February on the same subject. Didn't follow any of that advice either. Possibly a troll, possibly someone who doesn't give a doggone what his wife thinks or wants. Not worth any more time, either way.

How bored do you have to be to troll Houzz? We're not that exciting...

Those would look fantastic in a lighted plastic display box. :) Because that's what we all do with our shoes, right? Put them in the middle of a living room on display?
These comments are really childish. The op may have other priorities and can’t get to rearranging the room at this time. Just let him be, he will come back when he is ready. Have you ever thought maybe these uncalled comments are keeping him away?

I think the sofas should be facing each other....only thing I would change out is the desk..get a smaller desk table that can be pushed up against the back of the sofa....stack all the shoes in front of the window.

""Please somebody tell me what to do before my wife gets home in three hours."

That was on June 22nd. I somehow think his wife is home by now. And in the meantime, he's gone backwards, not forwards, in addressing the man-cave issue, doing the reverse of every suggestion made to him. And you think we're the ones who are childish?

I think the OP has a strong sense of self, a good sense of humor and a wife who is not obsessed about clutter. He will eventually get the room the way he wants it, with or despite our best efforts. :-) Responders surely shouldn't feel trapped into caring more than the family does about this space. It is not that serious.

Wow you guys are ruthless...no big deal to me if he returns and needs help myself as a Houzzer will try to help....I see a beautiful image on the wall of him and his wife...I think he is just a fun guy with a love for athletic shoes and thought he would enjoy receiving help from Houzz..seems to me he moved things around a lot....hope he has found a good layout.

I'm sure the advice given for the many dilemmas for "help me with my backsplash" and "what color should I paint my front door" is not followed, and many we never hear from again. It's the exception where people post on what they finally did. So that's nothing new for this thread.

This one is more entertaining than most, for me.

    following ...........cannot stop laughing.

Wow, I’m sorry I’m sorry. I didn’t have the time in the last couple of days. Besides the fact that for the last couple of days I’ll I did was get trashed. The room must get done, however, there really isn’t a time frame. I have to blame my wife. Lol, she’s not letting me get rid of the couch, however, she is NEVER down here so keeps filling the room with junk to make sure “her” living room stays nice and neat.

I’m glad to hear you have a separate living room that’s neat and organized:)!

I'm sorry but there's not a woman on earth who wouldn't let you "get rid of the couch"

And I mostly see stuff that seems to be yours.

This thread sounds a bit like getting a teenage son to clean his room....

So...since your wife is now home and she hasn't divorced you because you didn't meet the deadline for cleaning and organizing, I suggest you ask her what you should do. You can both decide what goes and stays without any help.

I really think that it is a shame that this Houzz thread is being so insulting to the homeowner:( where is this judgement coming from...not necessary at all if you don’t like this thread than stop commenting and unfollow ......so very disappointing....being a part of Houzz I am embarrassed at the comments.

You can't read tone... For example, yours smacks of superiority, however I have read your responses here over the years and know you're not like that...

If you've read past threads of Just M's....you'll see a pattern. Many people make many good suggestions, none of which gets used and most of which don't even get acknowledgement.

I find this thread amusing, as do others and I'm excited to see the end result...

Pennydesign I totally understand what you are saying but I still find it sad to hear how people can assume they know what is going on in a persons life or what the spouse should tell them...In this business I have meet so many interesting people....if a pattern is seen..I think it is best to ignore it and move on to another thread..words can be so hurtful and once said can not be taken back...And thank you for you understanding my thoughts and words expressed no superiority here just know how hurtful words can be...have been on the other side many times...Believe me I am a very unremarkable person.

I am in agreement with HIWE. It seems to be easy for some people to be hurtful on line when they're not facing the person they're directing their comments to. It is Much Easier to watch, listen, give constructive advice and Be Nice!

Well, for the record, I would say exactly what I said, face to face. I'm to-the-point with my suggestions. And I'm wondering how this got so far off track...Phoebe and Hiwe, do you have any suggestions for a change, here for the op? (if you've read the three threads, you will see that the op has trouble with change....)Interested to see what happens, as I said...

Yep suggested the sofas f@ce eachother and a desk behind the brown sofa that would have its back to the window...than stack the shoes infront of the window so the light is behind them....hang tv on large wall to the left of the Landry room door... like this....

I made suggestions some time ago, which are very similar to HIWE’s posting.

Thank you. Hey HIWE, I like your idea, but you really think it’s a good idea to block that big window with the shoes, ?

  • PRO

Yep..it is a man cave..the light will shine through the clear shoe boxes....if this is a window in front of the house...you will need to keep blinds flipped up just enough to keep light filtering in but helps not to see the boxes from the outside.....

If you put your trophy shoes in front of windows, you need UV protection so the shoes aren’t deteriorated by too much sun. So be mindful of that and decide what would be best for your collection.

If you really get a lot of sun just Put a window UVA film on that front window it will take care of it! You can purchase a roll at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Are they valuable? Is it wise to put them in front of the ground floor window? (Don't know what your security system is like...)

well I feel like a real dope

i left the house for 2 hours and came home to this

LOL! Send those elves over to my house!

I see improvement! You've got the furniture arranged better, the rug laid out, and the clutter picked up. Well done.

I'm pretty sure his wife did it while he was out of the house. She took 2 hours according to his last post :)

Actually 7 months, since Feb 22. There was an earlier thread on this room. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/a-little-help-with-layout-dsvw-vd~5151415

Can we see the rest of the room?
