What you're not supposed to see when you put a shade on a lamp is the switch or the harp. Your lamps seem fine in that respect. You don't need to compare the height of the lamp with the height of the shade. They shouldn't be the same.

Lamps are a matter of personal style and taste and space. This pair is really nice looking and the shade size is fine for the lamp. Yes, it is normal for a bit of neck to show.

That said, these wouldn't be my personal preference because I prefer tall thin lamps for a living room: wood or wood look, alternately metal or metal look. I prefer either white or beige shades (depending upon room in which it is to be used) -- shades are all are closer to large than small but certainly not huge.

All the (living room suitable) lamps in my home of this type -- seven -- are older lamps; the solid oak ones date back to late 1960's. It is increasingly difficult to find the kind of lamps I like for use in the living room -- at least none of the stores I've visited within a forty mile radius of my home have anything I like better than what I have so I've had to replace the electric cord on over half of them. Those I've found recently that even come close to anything I might use have shades that are waaaaaay too small for my personal taste.

For instance, I like this tall thin brass lamp but I'd toss the tiny shade and replace it with one at least twice as large. (I'd actually prefer the base to be round or square rather than rectangle.)

If the lamps are going to stay in the room you show in your picture then look for something warmer. Brass or colored glass. Those are very cold.

I wouldn't be impressed, sorry. They look plain and cold. There are so many gorgeous lamps out there and on line. If you show us your room, you would get plenty of suggestions.
