Looking for cabinet advice!!!!

last modified: 8 years ago

Hi all! First time posting here and am looking for suggestions on a good paint color to choose for the kitchen cabinets in our new home. Eventually we would like to do a full reno, as the layout is not my favorite, but that's just not in the budget at the moment! I'm attaching some pictures from the home listing to show the existing cabinets, floors, and granite color. I definitely do not want a stark white, and would prefer an off-white/cream/antique white that is warm and inviting. Haven't decided on a paint color for the walls yet, but will most likely be going with a beige shade that will flow on the entire first floor, thinking possibly Accessible Beige. Planning to get oil rubbed bronze hardware...just want to make sure we select the right shade for the cabinets! :)

agree w the above....I would do some small things....display pretty dessert plates above stove/backsplash area....get some cushions covered in pretty fabric for the stools..think about hardware...faux tiffany ceiling light fixture [something charming like that]..at reasonable cost. It has a warmth to it...just make it more inviting and wait for something bigger to do.

Not worth painting if you don't like the layout and are planning on changing it. Professionally painted cabinets are almost as much as new, and to DIY it is a ton of work. Just add some hardware and paint while you save up for the reno.

Agree, it looks like a nice bright space, and the cabinets, floor, and countertops go well together.

My quote for painting birch cabinets was less than half the cost of replacing them. I have read that Benjamin Moore White Dove and Cloud White are popular warm whites for cabinets.

Should’ve specified, we are already in the process of painting... they’ve been primed. We have a sprayer so while it has been labor intensive with all the masking and sanding, the cost has been lower than hiring a professional and it’s too late to turn back now! :) a full on renovation probably won’t be in the budget for 8-10 years so in the mean time we want to have a space we love. Just kind of looking for recommendations on the right shade of paint at this point.

Oh and we also have stainless appliances we are using if that makes any difference to anyone!

Dover White by BM is a very popular shade for cabinets.

We are currently painting our cabinets. I'm using Fine Paints of Oil paint. The final color is Vanilla Milkshake by BM.

I see you have a white door in the kitchen. Whatever you pick in the white family, they should match. But then what happens with all your other white doors in the house? And what is the window trim color? They should be considered also. One thing leads to another....

Here is a before and after from Houzz using SW Shoji White...

You’re spraying a conversion varnish? Or house paint? What kind of primer did you lay down?

    Stainless helps the situation.

You really can't go too creamy because of the white doors throughout - as someone already mentioned.

The easiest thing to do would be to match your existing interior doors. Easiest and most cohesive.

As far as product, if you haven't already purchased, consider PPG's Break Through in satin. You can consider the gloss only if you get a brush out and evaluate it first-hand. Don't buy the gloss blindly. Because gloss levels are so inconsistent brand to brand and one person's idea of "too shiny" is another's "perfect". I will say the gloss wears like iron but requires super picky prep and application - don't rush.

We have painted cabinets in bathrooms and kitchens using a range of product. Everything else will kill a DIYer in terms of drying time - BenM's advance asks for 16 hours between coats per the label, for example. Sherwin-Williams' ProClassic specifies 8. With Break Through you can get two coats on, with sanding/cleaning in between in one day.

Break Through is about $85 per gallon. Contractor's discount helps if you can get it. It's worth it. BEWARE it does not come off. Wipe up spills immediately otherwise you'll be going back with a blade.

Same with the surfaces you're painting, once applied, it is not coming off so prep and paint with intention.

Break Through was originally developed for paint store shelves by a small independent company. It was designed to dry fast and be super durable. All the major brands tried for years to crack the code and copy it. No one could figure it out. PPG finally just bought the company. Which is why there isn't another comparable product in any other brand.

Oh, and the odor with Break Through is significant. Ventilate well. It goes away quickly. Also, odor does not directly correlate with VOCs, so no reason to worry. But read the label or download the specs if the smell concerns you.

Thank you for the tips! Got SEVERAL paint samples... trim is being painted white too... does anyone have thoughts on Accessible beige for the walls with either BM white dove or SW pure white cabinets? How would that combo look with the granite we have and the flooring? Both of those colors seem to go well and don’t clash with the existing white doors...

Either would work with Accessible Beige. If neither clashes with your existing door color, then choose the one you like best.

My initial reaction is White Dove because I think it would coordinate better with the granite and the floor.

I think the number one mistake DIYers make is going too stark white with the cabinet color. SW Worldly Gray would look nice with SW Shoji White cabinets:)

Thanks so much! Lori, your response was so detailed and informative I truly appreciate it! Where do you buy the PPG breakthrough? My husbands research has pointed him toward the BM advanced
  • 8 years ago

If you like the BM advanced, look at the Fine Paints of Europe ECO. We used the oil based primer and the satin eco paint. It is amazingly smooth and super washable. No chips at this point.

    Nancy,

Try softer tan by sherwin Williams! Don’t let the color chip fool you! It dosent go on that dark! Buy a sample. It’s a perfect color imo. Not white but not yellow creamy.

Bowser24...lovely kitchen....but keep in mind you have very light flooring..Nancy has very strong golden oak floors with very golden granite. Every element plays a role...

Where do you buy the PPG breakthrough? My husbands research has pointed him toward the BM advanced

Yeah, I know. BM Advanced gets a lot of spin and the final finish is indeed lovely. It's the dry time between coats that's a problem especially for a DIYer. You get sick of the painting cabinets project very quickly because it takes a boatload of time to paint an entire kitchen - the prep alone can take a couple days. So when it comes time to paint, many DIYers are already "over it" and they rush.

You absolutely can not rush BM Advanced or SW's ProClassic.

That's where Break Through's fast dry to recoat time can save you.

You have to buy it from a Pittsburgh Paints paint store. Hopefully you have one nearby. I don't drive for paint or ask anybody to drive more than 30 minutes for paint. However, I'd do a short road trip for Break Through if necessary.

Thank you all so much for your input! I think I’ve narrowed down the cabinets to either white dove or cloud white. Those two seem to be creamy enough without clashing with the white doors and trim. I’ve tested several paint colors and my two favorites on my walls are accessible beige and canvas tan. Accessible beige is second from left and canvas tan is to its left. Hopefully I can make up my mind soon, I’m driving myself crazy!!

I wouldn't pick a paint color for the walls until the cabinets are done. When my sister remodeled her kitchen last year, she was very anxious to pick a paint color for the walls and completely changed her mind once her white cabinets were installed.
