Rabbits are the bane of my garden; the only thing that I have figured out is not to plant anything that is too small. The damn rabbits will often bite off a branch and then just leave it, really insulting! I do cage the littler ones (plants not rabbits) if they look just too tempting. I have a much bigger problem with them going after non-coniferous woody plants than I do with conifers, if that is any consolation. The only other thing that you might consider is growing the really tiny ones in containers that are tall enough to keep them out of rabbits' reach. But the jack rabbits we have around here are about 2' tall!

For deer, year round perimeter fencing. For rabbits, winter & early spring caging. Perimeter fencing is the least visually intrusive option at the plant level. Depending on how you do it, it can look ok at the landscape level.

This is why local advice is so important; my biggest problems with rabbits are summer and fall when there is little vegetation in the wild areas. Once the rains hit in the fall, they have plenty of other food. So much better to hear from someone in your own area!

Don't have rabbits but do have deer. And no way to fence them out. So I use repellents on plants that are likely to be browsed. Plantskydd is the brand I favor (deer, rabbit and elk repellent), is safe to use on any kind of plant, even edibles, and for me has proven to be pretty darn effective. And since it has a vegetable oil base (surfactant), it does not need to be reapplied after every rain or routine irrigation.
