Can’t afford to hire a PRO. Desperate for suggestions.

Weird layout. Just done repainting the wall niche. Front door opens directly to this small space with left side of door, another small area. Im getting rid of these sofa but I just placed it there to see how it would look like if I make it my living room. I really do not want to mount a tv on this wall niche so any suggestion is appreciated. HELP!

Hi! I'd put a large painting or artwork in the niche. Or you could mount a few wall shelves inside it and place things on the shelves. I'd use two chairs against the window, not a sofa. And a colorful rug and patterned curtains.

    Good Luck!

Is that area near your kitchen? I would say by the light fixture that it was intended as a dinning area. If you decide to use it for another purpose you may want to do a different style light there. For the niche I would do a console table with a mirror or art over it.

Yes, this was supposed to be the dining area that we never use & did not like the idea of having the dining where the front entrance/door is.
So just 2 chairs by the window? Nothing across it?
@Alaric Designs & Jamie Ludwig..thank you for the input. The light fixture definitely is gone . I have to figure out also what to do on the area that is left side of front door & attain a cohesive look.

Wasn’t there a similar post with the same chairs

What is the adjoining room with the chair that matches the sofa? Is that your actual living room (if this was supposed to be the dining room?)?

Not a pro myself but it is likely the pros here could be more helpful if you were to draw, to scale, the floor plan of the room(s) with which you seek help. Use graph paper and indicate the measurements and include any and all windows, doors, stairs, etc., too -- for both the room with the sofa and the chair.

Interesting sofa and chair; they're comfortable, and unless your tastes have drastically changed and/or you now hate them for some other reason, you might consider keeping them and using your decorating budget for other items such as end table/cabinets and/or lamps, etc.,

White mini blinds hung inside your window(s) could help you control sunlight/glare/privacy.

If you don't want to put the back of your sofa or a chair facing the front door so the sofa can face the niche wall, consider creating a pony wall out of cabinets to face the door and hide the back of the sofa or whatever chair you sit there.

You don't need to hang the tv on the wall in the niche but you clearly cannot ignore reality -- if that wall is the only wall uninterrupted by window or door, and/or if that wall is the location of your cable/antenna access, then you may well need to use it as a backdrop for your tv.

Does your niche have a bottom ledge or does the wall go all the way to the baseboard/floor? If the latter, it will be easier to use that wall.

What does the wall opposite the large window look like -- can the tv go against that wall? (pic?) and if you centered your sofa in front of the large window,

What does the back of your sofa look like? What does the back of the sofa you're considering getting look like?

You could focus on making the dining room and entry separate spaces by adding an appropriate room divider cabinet. A really large tall china cabinet could work -- you might need to attach the side of it to the exterior wall with the large window for stability and you may well need to add paneling to the back for a more finished look.

Alternately, you could begin with floor to ceiling shelves, then choose what shelves, if any, do you want to be open to both sides, what shelves to you want to be open only to the entry and what shelves do you want to be open only to the dining area.

Since you have a living room, I would be inclined to put shelves and builtins in the niche and make it a cozy area for reading or one-on-one conversation with a pair of nice comfortable chairs. If you don't have a coat closet anywhere, part of the builtin could include a coat closet.

I see you like the charcoal/ black translucent flower art - [I do too] - what about a rug with the chair color?

If chairs are in good condition, why donate them? good with medium-dark neutrals. Try to play off lines in the chairs with other types of lines... could be cool. :) ?

Yes Claire, this is the same area. I tried to put a console by the wall where the front door opens but did not look good esp with the large sofa. I sold the loveseat and retained this sofa to put upstairs. It will stay here until i figure out whether chairs or sofa is better.
@everdebz, the chairs are too big for the space. Im leaning towards just putting chairs like what Alaric Designs suggested but not he bulky ones.

Why is all your furniture pushed up against walls that aren't even rooms?

@suezbell, the wall divides this room & kitchen. The back of it is actually where cupboards, stove & fridge are. At first, i thought of putting a mantle and maybe wall mount fireplace?? 2 Chairs facing it, rug and light fixture but i still dont have any idea what to do with the other area left of front door. Another living room? Is there such thing as too much living room??
@leelee, was just moving furnitures coz i sold the loveseat, center table & end tables. Did not have time yet to arrange.

I would treat the whole space as a foyer. No table (at least not for dining) no sofa, no fireplace. A bench in the niche for guests to set down purses and put on shoes, art above it, and a large beautiful rug.

It's not a place to sit and relax, with the door right there. And it's a bit awkward to walk into a home and be greeted by the backs of two chairs.

The area to the left of the door (right side of this photo?) is your proper living room, it seems, and should be used as such.

Hi Lindsey, Im not quite sure I got your point. Do you have a sample pic?
So here is a pic if I move sofa facing wall niche. Apologize for the mess, Im painting the niche right now.
@lindsey, you mean like this? Only the bench placed by the wall?

It's still hard to get a feel for your room. Can you get more pictures from all 4 angles?

Try the sofa against the niche wall. Is there a fireplace? A TV in this area?

Leelee, cant move the sofa there yet, paint is wet. Window to wall across is approx 14ft (1st pic) , wall niche to front door is 16. (2nd pic)

Your console should have been placed in the niche and what is the dimensions of the entrance area or is that a closet and the other near bedroom

Oh that is my small laundry area.
At the back of the wall niche is the family/great room -kitchen & living.

    Forgive the primitive art.

New curtains would greatly help the look of this room. If you're putting art in the nook, choose a solid color from your art for the drapes, making sure it doesn't clash with whatever furniture you'll be using.

I tried... Curtains , im thinking of semi sheer so theres still natural light. No sofa, maybe just an oversize rug?? A bench by the window?

Your curtain rod needs to be wider so your curtain panels frame the window but not block it.

No to a sofa staring at a mirror reflecting the front door. That's a non-starter.

"Hi Lindsey, Im not quite sure I got your point."

Exactly what groveraxle mocked up for you 41 minutes ago is what I was thinking.

No sofa or chairs facing the wall, that is not a welcoming first sight for your guests or yourself, and sitting with your back to the front door is possibly going to be very disconcerting.

I like this idea groveraxle :) Do i need to put a rug?
Niche is perfect for a library...along the whole wall. Two comfy armchairs and a table and lamp.

Yes, just turn it into a large foyer like groveraxle mocked up. Very inviting and welcoming, and no awkward bulky furniture cluttering up space.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Expansive foyer it is! :)
The built-in shelf look awesome but would probably take awhile to achieve so i am going with art and table. Less dusting too!

You could put a desk and chair in your expansive foyer.
