Could you post pictures of the diner (dining area) and lounge (living room)? Just seeing the kitchen makes it difficult to get a feel for colors that could coordinate and flow together well. I tend to like white with gray, so I may be of little use. But others here will surely be more creative.

You are absolutely right about the worktops, they will add some warmth to the room. Will you have pulls on the cupboards? Perhaps some brass in the room would be nice.

Everyone panics a bit when they are making big changes like this and nothing is finished. It will all come together very well.

It's a construction zone still and no lights are on, so no wonder it looks bleak! I would wait until it's more finished to decide on wall color - you don't really have much "wall" to paint.

I have a gray kitchen - it's SW's "Repose Gray". It's not an open concept - a traditional 4-walled kitchen. It's quite choppy due to 3 door openings and a huge bay window over the sink. This is the 3rd time I've decorated this room over the past 34 years so I've tried two other ways of doing so. This time, I decided to keep it harmonious, so I painte what few walls I have (none very big) the same color as the cabinets but I had the paint store make it half-strength. That helped it look lighter. It's a very calm, soothing room with tons of light. I also used polished brass pulls and have hardwood floors - these warm it up, as does the small collection of antique polished copper on top of one cabinet.
